The Centennial Conference is a Divison III track and field conference that features Haverford, Dickinson, John's Hopkins, and my own Muhlenberg to name a few. If you're wondering what kind of times are needed to be in the top 10 in a very powerful distance conference (Haverford just won the NCAA Cross Country Championship) then this list is for you.

The Weekend Wrap Up
Wondering what happened this weekend??
Perhaps the best place to start would be the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden. Pennsylvania's own Angel Piccirillo was racing in the girls mile. On the slow track she still raced to sub 5 in the mile and finished 6th in a field that included some of the best girl milers in the nation including third place finisher Ajee Wilson who split a 2:00 800 last spring. Angel is still getting back into track shape after a break out cross country season. She will come into the Indoor State Championships as the favorite in the mile and perhaps the 800m as well. On the men's side Chad Noelle won a tight race in 4:16 to cap off a fantastic stretch for him that included a 4:11 mile in qualifying.
Although I originally was going to be making the trip to my first ever Millrose games this year my trip was cancelled due to my 800m debut at Muhlenberg's home meet. Little did I know my old high school rival Chanelle Price would be running the same event the next day. Chanelle ran a blistering 2:05.61 in the 800m at Penn State Saturday less than 24 hours after I myself ran 2:05.78. Once again Chanelle bested me (although I ran on a 160m flat track and she ran on a 200m banked one so ...).
At that same Penn State meet Cas Loxsom was stealing the show from all other 800m runners in the nation with a 1:47.36 NCAA #1 time and Penn State Record (in addition to the fieldhouse and meet records). This effort for Loxsom comes after he set a school record in his very first 500m (61 seconds and change). Loxsom was paced through the opening laps almost perfectly by PA's own Bernard Bennent-Green from Cheltenham.
However, Loxsom was not finished his day after this spectacular 800m. Cas came back to run the second leg in a very exciting 4x400m that ended up setting the Penn State school record in 3:09.08. Pennsylvania's own Brady Gehret and Aaron Nadolsky ran the third and fourth legs in 46.9 and 47.4. Loxsom's second leg was a blazing 46.6. Gehret won the 200m earlier at the meet.
Besides Brady another Freshman phenom was burning up the track at Penn State as Nick Scarpello won the slower second in the invitational mile with a 4:09.11 finish. This is another fast performance for Nick following his quick 3k earlier this year. Scarpello talked about his training with us earlier this season and I am glad to see we have not jinxed his success.
Other notable performances were turned in by Georgetown's Ben Furcht in the 3k (8:16), Jim Spisak in the mile (4:12) and Micah Murray in the 500m (63.2)
Videos of all these performances (besides my 800m of course) can be seen on flotrack: http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/238132-2011-Penn-State-National-Meet/video/441019-M-4x400-F01-Invite.
The news on Loxsom's rival Robby Andrews says Andrews is injured although at the moment the site does not know the extent or cause of the injury.
Alex Monroe broke 15 in an excellent 5k performance for Division II Lock Haven.
In other college news Sam Ellison ran a new PR of 1:51.22 in the 800m at the Armory for Villanova and follwed it up with a 47.7 400m split. This comes after Ellison's very quick 500m (62 and change) earlier this season.
The veteran to Sam Ellison's rookie, Tom Mallon, ran a solid debut in the 800m for Stanford running 1:54.16.
Sources suggest Mallon will be joined next season by Luke Lefebure who broke 2:00 in the 800m at Glenn Mills very early in the morning in his debut in the open.
Kyle Moran, another 800m star, has allegedly committed to Duke and Penntrack reports Chris Campbell is committed to Penn State.
Campbell ran 4:23 this week to throw his name into championship discussion, while 9 minutes later, Tom Trainer had a PA #1 8:50 in the 3000m at the same meet at Glenn Mills.
Finally, the big news of the day was that Lukas Verzbickas, two time footlocker champion and indoor national 5000m record holder, has decided to take his talents to Oregon to join in on a historic tradition.

Top 5 Names You Should Remember Come Indoor States
Here's a list of guys who I feel are having awesome seasons but flying under the radar a little bit so far. So here is 100% reason to remember the name ...
5. Lower Moreland- Who are these guys?? Well they are currently the PA #2 team in the 4x8 with a 8:06 behind only heavy favorites Abington. They have no flashy big names but they have performed well before with a great time at AA States last spring. Obviously getting to run a bank track well many other top teams have not gives them a nice advantage, but they still ran a time that medals most years at the State Championships. Pretty solid for such a small school.
4. Cardinal O'Hara Relays- No love for the XC squad and now the track team isn't getting talked about either! 2 individuals have qualified for states in the 400 from this squad including Tyler Gallen, PA #5. Those legs help make their 4x2 and 4x4 relays top squads overall, already qualifying for the state championships in both with a 1:31 and 3:29 respectively. Let me remind you they are the defending 4x4 champs from outdoors. On top of that they're distance squad as dialed up a sub 11 DMR on a flat track while also sporting an 8:10 4x8.
3. Mahdi Koliso- Glenn Mills isn't known for their distance running, but you wouldn't know it when looking at Mahdi's stats. After a killer XC season where he finished in the top 15 at districts he has run 8:58 for 3000m, one of only three men to hit the qualifying standard (faster than Alex Izewski and Juris Silenkis). He's sported decent times in the shorter races like the 800 and may have a bright future in the mile.
2. Brett Kelly and Boyertown- One of the few teams who have not run on banked tracks, Boyertown has not run amazing times but they have been very solid since December. An 8:16 early on and a 10:49 as of late indicate great fitness. Brett Kelly has also run 9:01 for 3k by himself in flats and has run 4:28.32, the fastest mile on a flat track thus far. Once this squad gets on to a fast surface they will be dangerous.
1. Manny Collins- Manny had a huge weekend running a PA #2 in the 400 (49.40) after showing he could hang near Gilmore earlier in the season at Burdette. Then he helped lead his 4x2 and 4x4 teams to PA #2 times including a 3:23 4x4. He also recently helped the 4x8 team qualify for states on a flat track. By states this man may show up a lot on the medal stand.

The Scarp Show
When the top PA high school runners were choosing their colleges in the spring of 2010, fans of the sport looked for the big names: Brad Miles, Rad Gunzenhauser, Tom Mallon. Fans also were attracted to the roster of stars Penn State was adding to their team highlighted by Brady Gehret (46.39, 21.12, 9 time state champion), Matt Fischer (9:03, 3200m State Champion), Bernard Bennent-Green (47.94/1:56, 4x4 Indoor State Champion, part of state best 3:13 at Penn Relays). All these phenomenal performances overshadowed one runner on both lists: Nick Scarpello.
Nick Scarpello, who graduated Central Bucks West High School in 2010, chose to attend Penn State University after an impressive career. Nick is an engaging and intelligent runner focused on what he needs to do to be the best and accepting nothing short of it. Anyone who has seen Nick finish a race with gritted teeth knows he puts everything he has into the sport. He also passed on his knowledge and support to his teammates helping to create a solid group of young talent. Anyone who has talked to Nick knows he will give straight answers and tell it like it is. His confidence is contagious. Nick’s story over the past year is truly noteworthy as an example of what hard work, confidence and determination can bring.
As a senior at CB West Nick raced to a 15:42 5k PR and a 15th place finish at the 2009 XC State Championships. After a breakout season on the grass, Nick came indoors with big goals. An 8:47 3k in the middle of the season caught the attention of penntrack’s posters and after a 4:18 mile at the Meet of Champions, some fans (myself included) were picking Nick for the win. Unfortunately, a slow opening quarter played to the strengths of cross town rival Tom Mallon, who would finish first in the race. Nick finished 4th.
However, a tough defeat indoors did not keep Nick down for long. Early in the outdoor season in a dual meet with Hatboro Horsham, Scarpello, paced by the Hatter’s Kevin DiFlorio’s blistering opening laps, unleashed a 4:15 1600m. The time was very quick for that early in the season. Yet misfortunate would strike Nick again as an injury caused him to miss out on Penn Relays and seriously set back his training. Individual glory in the 1600m would not come this spring. However, Scarpello still mentored and anchored a fairly young, up and coming CB West squad to a school record in the 4x800 and a second place finish at the state championships with a time of 7:44.13.
Because of the setbacks in the spring Nick did not come into the fall cross country season at Penn State as a “big star”. Most saw him as a nice fit into a solid cross country team, but not a top 7 performer on a solid Big Ten squad. But as the season progressed, Nick quickly became one of the top freshman XC runners from PA’s class of 2010. And his team seemed to have the same persona as he did, flying under the radar. “Penn State may have surprised some people this year” Nick explained, “But we certainly didn’t surprised ourselves.” Nick describes one of his favorite races as his 10k on Penn State’s grueling home course. Once again he ran fast when he was counted out. “[I was] Considered likely out of it halfway through the race, I negative split the uphill back half of the race and moved up quickly through a field of runners that was fading fast”. His team’s finish at the Regional meet helped qualify them for the National Championships where Nick would be the only PA graduate from the class of 2010 to compete. Not a bad start for a guy who finished 15th at States only a year earlier.
Nick feels his success started with solid high school training. Doing around 50 mile weeks in high school Nick’s focus was “quality, not quantity”. With teammate Matt Bee (currently a senior at CB West), he kept his maintenance runs quick. “I really feel that focus helped make the transition to collegiate training pretty much seamless for me”. Nick also feels rewarded by the consistency that collegiate athletics offers both on and off the track. Sleep and nutrition are an important, often overlooked, part of a runner’s success, and at college Nick feels he has improved both.
His work has paid off. Running currently at about 70-75 miles a week Nick is in fantastic shape. He showed off for the Penn State crowd running 8:20 for 3000m this past weekend, a huge PR and top time nationally. Off a 4:34 first mile, Scarpello held on strong with a pack of surging Albany runners, picking off a few en route to the finish. This is a great sign of fitness for Scarpello who is happy to feel healthy and confident once again on the track, a feeling one can argue he has not had in almost a year. What’s next for this Nittany Lion stand out? Nick is hoping to run fast in the mile, where most of his indoor training has been geared thus far. Outdoors look for him in the steeple chase and the 5000m. Although we may not know how fast Nick will run this season we can say one thing for certain: Nick is not flying under the radar anymore.

Fast Early Indoor Track Times
Brady Gehret, the superstar of the 2010 PA track class has already made a name for himself at the college level. He opened with a 21.29 in the 200m and also helped lead his 4x400m relay to a 3:09.45 on a relay that also included Altoona graduate Aaron Nadolsky. It is the fourth fastest 4x4 time posted in the NCAA. Also running for Penn State Ijeoma Iheoma ran a 55.88 for the 400m, currently ranking her 34th in the nation.
Sam Ellison, Upper Dublin graduate competing for Villanova, ran his first ever race at the Armory this past weekend and grabbed a first place finish as well as a US #4 62.76 for 500m. The time would have placed fourth at the Big East Championships last year. In the same meet Penn's Matt Chylak ran a 2:27 for the 1000m to win his race.
TJ Hobart reemerged as a national caliber force racing to a 2:28 1000m and 1:51.93 800m this past weekend for Virginia. The team continues to have success molding top middle distance runners as he placed third in the 800 behind two teammates. Paul Springer ran 14:46.15 for the 5000m breaking out of a serious slump. It is the 14th fastest time over that distance thus far this season.
Taylor Bumpas ran fast for Maryland at Penn State's quick track running 2:13.22. Senior Owen Dawson represented the home team at the same meet running a very quick 4:04.26 for the Mile, currently third in the nation. In NYC, Nick Crits was eager to not be outdone and raced to a very quick 4:08.65. Nick Scarpello as a freshman at Penn State is off to a very nice start himself running 8:20 for 3000m. Bernard Bennent-Green opened with a 1:20 600m at the same meet showing off the depth Penn State has in their Freshman class.
Tennessee superstar Chanelle Price dropped a 4:47.49 at her off distance of the mile.
According to some sources state record holder Tom Mallon ran the 800 leg on a 9:51 DMR for Stanford.

Who's Next?
With the great class of seniors currently in high school, many elite colleges are working hard to improve their program by recruiting these runners to their teams. So far we have already heard that CB East's stars Katie Kinkead and Jenny Guidera have made their college selections to run for Syracuse and Princeton respectively. Hong Cho, current PA #1 800 runner looks to be headed to Cornell next season to help improve their mid-distance program. Rumors are current PA #1 Miler Kyle Moran is considering Virginia and Duke among other choices. Penn State has significantly boosted their stock by adding Wade Endress and Chris Campbell to their 2011 roster. Updates will come as we learn more.
Other rumors claim Luke Lefebure is considering Stanford as one of his top schools. Ryan Gil allegedly is looking at joining former Footlocker Finalists Mark Dennin and Ben Furcht at Georgetown. Matt Gilmore is looking at joining former teammate Bernard Bennent-Green at Penn State, while Brandon Bennent-Green allegedly is considering transfering to reunite the dynamic trio in one year.

PA XC Guys Year In Review
2010 NCAA Championships
Penn State brought a significant amount of PA alumns with them to the National Championships including Kyle Dawson and Vince McNally who finished 2nd and 3rd at the Regional meet. Dawson was the top PA alumn at the meet finishing in 64th. McNally finished 92nd in the race. Both sported fantastic mustaches in attempts to help the team with the stashies team competition sponsored by flotrack. Kyle's brother Owen also aided Penn State, finishing 203rd overall. Former Seneca Valley stand-out Chris Cipro snagged 213th for the Nittany Lions while Freshman standout Nick Scarpello represented PA's class of 2010 well finishing in 226th.

New Use of the Blog
So I realized very quickly that I like seeing what my old PA rivals and friends have been running in college, but I also realized this information is much harder to track than it was in high school with a website like penntrack. Therefore, I am changing over this blog to talk about the things PA favorites have been doing in college. Feel free to send me additional notes and information I may have missed or overlooked and also feel free to discuss how certain runners have been performing and make predictions or anything like that. Enjoy.
