State Talk

Attention guys who are running at states! I think it would be cool if we heard from you guys about your experience running at states this year, what you thought of the course, how the race played out, stuff like that. Also any spectators too that want to share their first hand experience. Facebook message me any time with quotes or if you want me to ask you questions because you're not sure what to talk about. Hopefully we can see some interesting stories.

Prepare for a Revamping of the Blog

I need ideas still but hey I'm going to do my best to make this thing awesome again! Just want to apoligize for the earlier lack of posts on here. So what I am working on right now is a version of the DMR except for slightly different than you would expect. 3200-800-1600-5000. Other things in the works as well. Plus I want to try and get links and things to awesome stuff on here. Whatever gets people pumped about running. It would be awesome if I could make this a spin-off version of penntrack and that is one of my goals for the future of the blog. But that won't happen unless I get back to the basics and surpass what I have done in the past. Any suggestions let me know and good luck to everyone running at XC States!!

XC Fantasy Race

You have 75 points you can spend on this race. You must pick a minimum of 5 runners. There is no limit to how many runners you can pick but be aware the top 5 on each team will score, the top 7 will displace.

The race will be run on the state's course this time the way it was raced in 2009 (same course lay-out that includes poop-out hill etc.). You can post your teams either on the blog or the etrain page. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Here are the values, just like last time the highest possible value for your pick is the value.
Remember you have 75 points.

etrain Poster Moments

So as the bracket goes on, I will try and pick one race that I thought was epic enough that there should be poster of it. Each of these races will feature someone who is currently up for voting. This round's race is:
PTFCA Indoor State Championships Men's DMR 2010
There were many teams who took the trip to Penn State hoping for a team trophy. 3 of them were featured in the DMR championship race. As the men toed the line Penn Hills, CB South, and Altoona were fighting tooth and nail with Cheltenham for the top spot. Penn Hills came in as one of the top seeds and CB South had the Indoor State Champion in the mile and Indoor state record holder at 800m: Tom Mallon. Baldwin and Henderson came in with the top seeds, however, and had fresh legs at 1200 and the anchor. Henderson's Luke Lefebure had also pulled off a shocking upset earlier that day in the 800m final. GFS and St. Joe's Prep came in with experience in the DMR. All signs pointed to a fantastic race. Etrain's stance: "I expect fresh legs to prevail and I like GFS in the upset with Henderson taking second."

When it came time for the race Tom Mallon was seriously spent from his earlier individual efforts. He lay on the ground in agony after a tough 800 finish. However, there was no doubt he would be a dangerous anchor leg. CB South was off the medal stand if they couldn't beat Penn Hills by serious amount, while Altoona was looking to hold off Cheltenham, who had just one race left to score, the 4x4, which they were almost a lock to win. If Penn Hills one the race and pulled off an upset in the 4x4 they too could take home a team championship. Needless to say Altoona could not afford to choke in their final race of the day.
Race Commentary from announcers Jarrett Felix and etrain11:
Jarrett: "And the gun has sounded here for the Men's Distance Medly Relay and the runners are out cleanly."
etrain: "Quite a support showing by the Altoona faithful as the stadium is quaking with their cheers. Altoona is located not too far from Penn State as you can see by the zip code on the fan's shirts."
Jarrett: "This track is a great place to run fast, especially with great track fans like this. It looks like Tom Waterman of GFS is going to handle the pace here with Chris Fischer right next to him. But really this is just one large pack through the first lap."
etrain: "This is a new order from the one GFS used to qualify and should yeild a much faster time. Tom Waterman was the 400 leg of GFS's Championship of America DMR in 2008."
Jarrett: "Pre race favorite Baldwin is making a surge now as they want to stay in the mix. Meanwhile WPIAL rivals Penn Hills seem to be slipping a little off the pace."
etrain: "Dorian Rumble placed second in the 800 earlier and he looks like he his feeling that race in his legs. Balwin will not let this pace go too slow as Cecala begins to string out the pack."
Jarrett: "CB South now making a move, that's Joey Waddington who has been flying under the radar as one of the better 12 legs in the state. He may not have the flashy achievements of the others but he is not letting it show as they pass the halfway point. Waterman, however, still looks very comfortable out front, no signs of slowing down."
etrain: "One lap to go the race is on! Brady Gehret steps out to wait for the baton but Fischer is back in 5th at the moment. Just trying to keep them in contention."
Jarrett: "But Waterman will hand off the stick ahead of the rest, Cecala behind him and a fantastic finish for Waddington. The 400 runners are off, Arkangelo James from Baldwin is flying here on this opening 200."
etrain: "Listen to this crowd cheer! White Lightening has struck!"
Jarrett: "Gehret is already up into third, James is in first as it has already become a clear cut five team race. Penn Hills is fighting hard to stay in the mix, the team title hanging in the balance."
etrain: "Altoona can lock it up if Liberman and Endress can hold on to this spot. Gehret is now in second as they come down the final straight, Baldwin's Dennis Logan will have the edge."
Jarrett: "And its around a 48 second split for Gehret, the Altoona fans are screaming now for Jordan Liberman."
etrain: "Endress said if his team could get him the stick near by he thought he had enough left to go for the win. This leg will be the key."
Jarrett: "Pre race favorite Henderson is still back in 5th, but they are giving the baton to newly crowned state champion Luke Lefebure. CB South still near the leaders with Mallon waiting to chase someone. Right now number 1 seeded Balwin is trying to run away from the field as Logan is really pounding. Liberman is working hard in second running in his classic style with his tounge out."
etrain: "Tom Denno moving very quickly for CB South, his first lap has got to be about the same as Lefebure's."
Jarrett: "Lefebure looks very in control here, letting the race come to him once again. The pack is grouping up slowly, Logan still out ahead but looking very strained, his shoulders rising. The sophomore Bobby Bishop has to be feeling nervous, the biggest moment of his young career about to unfold."
etrain: "Here comes a big move by Lefebure on the outside! He's moving up into second now and Will Kellar looks ready to go on the sideline."
Jarrett: "Baldwin, Henderson, Altoona, GFS, CB South, and Penn Hills all in the mix. Waterman's still got a little juice left, Denno is fading after his early surge. Here they come to the exchange, Bishop will get it first but not by much. Endress is stepping down as well, but he looks to have gotten it a little too far behind the others. He will not be able to dictate the pace much.'
etrain: "Endress has got a poten kick so he won't mind running from the back in my opinon. The question remains can Bobby Bishop drop some of the most experienced achors in the state."
Jarrett: "And if the pace is too slow can Tom Mallon find himself in a posistion to strike?"
etrain: "If these runners know whats good for them they will look to get as far away as possible from Endress and Mallon."
Jarrett: "Well that is exactly what the youngster has started off with, breaking away from the chase pack, Bishop seems content to do all the work out front. Kellar, McKenzie and Endress follow."
etrain: "Well Mallon doesn't look too good, Anderson is already stepping on the gas to catch him and both are relatively far away. It will take a big move to catch the leaders and I don't think either of these runners are capable of it at this point after having just run such strong 800s."
Jarrett: "Meanwhile Endress has surged here saying I don't want to wait for Bishop to run away with this one before I make my move."
etrain: "Interesting decision here, there is no way Endress isn't feeling that Mile from earlier, he has to be careful not to make too much of a move too early."
Jarrett: "Kellar and McKenzie have no urgency right now in their pace, they are not afraid of Bishop's lead although he is holding it quite well out front. If they wait too long they will run out of track."
etrain: "It's still early in the race, Bishop is moving at a quick pace maybe even a foolish pace. Mallon meanwhile has a solid hold on 5th, not sure if he'll have enough to catch anyone else."
Jarrett: "Bishop is definitely struggling here as now Kellar has taken over the chasing duites, Endress falling back to 4th. Kellar will make his surge now and go for the win."
etrain: "The move has to break a lot of confidence from Endress, that may end Altoona's chances in this race."
Jarrett: "And Kellar is now right on Bishop's shoulder the move was timed very well and McKenzie and Endress were left a little shell shocked and trying to find something left for the final laps."
etrain: "The Altoona fans are trying to breath some life into Endress, who needs some CPR right now if he's going to come back."
Jarrett: "And now Bishop is plumetting in the field, Kellar is outfront with a sizeable lead as he heads into the final lap: a sprint for home. This will be quite a win for Henderson, who won the race back in 2007."
etrain: "This race isn't over yet! Here comes a move from Wade Endress, left for dead about 2 laps ago finding enough left in the tank to move into second. Does he have enough track left? The crowd has come to its feet roaring and cheering for Endress!"
Jarrett: "It looks like Kellar doesn't know Wade is breathing down his neck, he's tying up as they approach the line, perhaps he made too early of a kick."
etrain: "He's fist pumping prematurely here! Endress will lean and .... he might have gotten him! How could Kellar not know Endress was right there!"
Jarrett: "A truly herculean effort by Endress who we dug himself out of a huge hole here and first or second he has won Altoona the team title!"
etrain: "The scoreboard reads Henderson then Altoona, seperated by a mere three hundreths of a second. Wow, what a finish."
Jarrett: "This is why we love track and field!"

Hey everyone I need your help! I set up a bracket of the greatest PA HS distance runners in the past decade just like March Madness and the only way to pick the winner is to have all of you vote! Every three days or so I should have a new match-up and a post with a bio about those in the match-up! I encourage all of you at home to fill out your own brackets and see how accurately you can predict the match-ups, if you enter them on here or the etrain page I will keep track of them for you. Your Turn to Get In on the Action

Alright guys so here's something you might like to think over while I'm busy researching the fastest 400 runner from Hawaii or Idaho's best miler ....

Now that you know a few of my opinions on some of the top runners I challenge each of you to build the best DMR of any PA runners from the JF era you can think of. Each person's created DMR will be entered into a race where I will determine the winning team.

Here's the catch: You can't just pick any 4 guys that you want otherwise every team would think fairly similar. So each of you will start with 40 points that you have to "buy" runners for your squad. Here's how the point system works.

$28 Any runner with a PR under 4:14 for 1600m (split or open)
$25 Tom Mallon
$20 Any state champion who does not meet these requirements (including XC, relays/teams do not count)
$18 Luke Lefebure
$15 Any runner from North Penn (who doesn't meet the requirements above)
$15 Brady Gehret
$15 Any runner with a PR under 1:53.5 (split or open) for 800m (once again who doesn't meet the above requirements ... this will go for all values)
$15 Any runner with a PR under 9:20 for 3200m
$10 Any runner with a 400 PR under 48.8 (split or open)
$10 Any runner with a 1600 PR under 4:18.5 (split or open)
$5 Any runner with a PR under 1:55 (split or open)
$1 Anybody else

I just made these numbers up randomly off the top of my head so ... hopefully it doesn't make it impossible and makes from some interesting strategies.

So I'm sure many of you are wondering, what does the fact that Lehigh is the course of this race have to do with how well everyone runs in this JF Era XC championship race? Valid question. For starters it makes my job harder. Not everyone in this race will have raced on this course, unlike Hershey. In addition the Lehigh course this past year was a mess on district day (and many believe was slightly extended), therefore the times were significantly slower, especially the first mile. So in order to try and estimate an accurate comparison for previous years I assumed the course was exactly 30 seconds slower in 2009 than 2008,7 and 6.

Speaking of times, the fact that the race is being run at Lehigh means much faster times than any other course. At Hershey there would have been zero runners under the 15 minute mark, at Carlisle probably only one or two. At Lehigh in this coming race I estimate about 8 runners will be under 15. May be less yet also I could easily see more dipping under.

Now for those of you who don't know the Lehigh course has excellent footing, wide running lanes and very few hills, most of which are long and rolling. The last 1200m or so is virtually all down hill. Usually speed orientated guys can handle the course better than true cross country guys, who would dominate track guys on a course like Hershey.

This concept of the course benefiting some runners over others leads me to my next point: who are the winners and losers of this course decision? Here's a basic list I thought of answering that very question:
Winners
Paul Springer- Easily the biggest winner having run 14:47 at Lehigh already. It is tough to imagine anyone running faster than this time. The two next fastest guys were the two just behind Paul at the 2006 District Championships.
Kyle Dawson- Very underrated runner who has the benefit of boasting one of three sub 15s on the course in the JF era.
Chris Aldrich- Chris beat Mark Dennin at the District meet at Lehigh in 2007. Dennin went on to place the highest out of any PA runners in the JF era at Footlocker Nationals, meaning he may be the favorite for this race if it was on any other course.
Trevor VanAckeren- Don't sleep on the D11 guys they run this course too. Trevor ran a 15:33 to win his Distict meet as a Junior in 2006. He never medaled at states. Tim Stepp (runner up to Trevor in '06) finished 9th at states.
Ben Furcht- Undefeated on the course his senior with two wins going away. He knows how to run the last mile of the race.
North Penn- They really are a track school to begin with, throw in the fact that Bernitt, Quintrell and even Miles have run better statistically at Districts vs. States.
A few other guys worth noting: Matt Chylak, Pierre LeCorre, Dave Dennison, Tom Mallon, Vince McNally, Upper Dublin, CR North and Henderson

Losers
Boyertown Bros- Dennin and Weller both lost at their district championships before some very convincing state championships. Both would have had a much easier time handling Springer had they raced at Hershey. Throw in Tarsnane and the Pac 10 got screwed.
Sean Ward- One of Coatesville's unsung heros finishing 12th at states but finishing much farther back at Districts. He was only 7 seconds off his district time at states.
Cam Stauffer- Really knew how to run the states course well which is a tough thing to know. His expertise paid off in an 11th place finish in 2007.
District 2 guys- Mickas and Ayers took 5th and 8th respectively on the states course in 2008. Micikas didn't even break 16 at Paul Short that season.
Joe Beveridge- Absolutely owned the states course in 2007 and 2008. Did not do the same anywhere else.
LaSalle- They are a true XC team but they have yet to have a huge performance at the Paul Short Invitational.
Others who should be unhappy: Logan Mohn, Steven Welsh, Isaac Dunkleburger, Altoona

The first mile will be coming out ASAP so keep an eye out!

Dear Mr. Young,

I've been thinking for a long time about what you said and your appearence nd chance meeting with a couple of my formal teammates at the Phils Tavern 5k seems to me to be a sign.

Obviously, during the glories days of penntrack you led a group of prominent posters on a quest to make the penntrack boards the best in all the land, and clearly it was a Golden Age.Now things have changed a lot and at times penntrack seems all but dead (like right now for instance).

Therefore, with these thoughts in mind, in order to bring about a resurgance of penntrack posters old and new I feel that a challenge is in order: a competition of penntrack posters old vs. new.

So I have come up with a few ideas: a trivia contest, a penntrack race (think wikipedia race), a team decathalon, a volleyball game, or a race to see who can get more posts by different people in a forum.

Clearly some ideas are by far more practical than others. Look the point of this is that penntrack is flat out boring right now. We might as well spice it up and keep it from the same sad extinction that dyestat forums have had (although they were thriving when they were taken down). Myself and my brothern of the current penntrack posters club (or the CPPC as no one but me calls it) have made are offer, the ball is now in your court.

Sincerely,etrain11

In this game of track and field you can call me Mel Kiper.

You know your a penntrack addict if ....

Inspired by the facebook group: "You know you run cross country if ..." and also my life.

1. Your home page is penntrackxc.com
2. You've attended the state meet four times ... and raced there zero :(
3. You talk about shoes constantly ... so much that your girlfriend is just embarassed ...
4. Just kidding you don't have a girlfriend your obsessed with penntrack ....
5. You have a watch tan line ...
6. Even though most people can't tell because you only leave the house to run and then you come home on go on penntrack all day
7. You know who Bob Gasior, Tim Shea, and Nick Burkwitt are ...
8. You think anyone who doesn't know who Bob Gasior, Tim Shea, and Nick Burkwitt are is a total noob.
9. You use the word noob.
10. You never actually talk to your best friends besides through facebook chat ... while simultaneously searching penntrack ...
11. You despise the phrase "Didn't he win states in something?" Because it should be obvious to anyone who is anyone in the track world who has won states in everything. Please good sir.
12. You have a HUGE picture of Steve Prefontaine in your room.
13. You have a HUGER picture of etrain in your room :)
14. You have a HUGEST picture of Don Rich in your room
15. You think the gym class mile is silly and pointless ....
16. Because you have no reasonable shot to PR!!! How are you supposed to run fast in a gym uniform with no competition!!
17. You don't use school time for class notes, but instead you use it for calculating proper splits for PRing ...
18. Predicting results of certain races ...
19. Creating a ranking system for the top 50 XC runners in the state ...
20. And/or creating a virtual meet using project times based on actual times you researched during one of those times you could have been having social life and/or doing your calculus homework.
21. You have slapped multiple people for telling you "its just a second, how much difference does it make?" Because now you have to adjust your entire ranking system and move Sean Mallon down the list and reconvert the mile time to 1600!
22. You can recognize the fact that someone else is a runner simply by their shoes and clothing ....
23. And the fact that you've stalked the man for about a year, so when you run into Stephen Welsh at a random pizza place you can tell your friends who it is and they totally won't judge you or anything. Right?
24. Unfortunately all your friends do judge you and thus your only friends are Jake Portock, Josh Rinker, and Jim Dillner.
25. You have a box you read to each night before you tuck it into bed. It is currently sitting in a glass case to avoid unfortunate drops of drool from falling upon it ... again ... because you just get lost staring at the Oregon DMRs signature ....... o gosh thank gooodness the glass box was there
26. Most normal people would stop the list at 25, a nice even logical number but you extend the list for some unknown reason ....
26.2--> Oh. Ok, now that makes sense ....
