Anchor Shawn Wolfe was able to take it fairly easy running 55/2:00 as he is in the open 800 later in the day. Not sure if Curt Jewett ran in the 4x8 after getting DQ'd in the 1600 yesterday.

Cumberland Valley takes Second, official results up soon. John Lewis had a huge second leg for Cheltenham though, split about 1:54.
Also really like the big leg by Coburn on the third leg, he ran really well to get his squad back in it. Francis just had one heck of a motor in that wind. Nice coaching move by DT East to move Caldwell to the third leg, I really like that decision and I think it paid off. Times are not going to be fast today, wind is a big factor.
Also big anchor by Red Lion's Gatchell to get them into 5th place.

After being DQ'd in the 1600m pre-lims Curt Jewett was out for blood as he made a big move with 250 to go to take over the lead from Dan Alexander. He finished strong to get his first state title. A big kick at the end gave Smathers a silver to go along with his Gold in the 1600m earlier in the day.

800m was a fantastic race in AAA. Kunzweiler was leading until 120m left and from the video it seemed as though he was really close to the rail and attempted to step towards the middle of lane one with his left foot and he clipped the back of his heel with his right foot, since there was no space on the ouside (Rivera was right there). Brehm jumped over him and stormed home for the victory. Really great racing by all 3 and I don't believe a foul occured. Real shame for Kunzweiler though, who had an unbelievable career. Great doubles by Coburn and Caldwell off the 4x8 3rd legs for there teams to medal.

Point update for the Team Title
Garnet Valley: 35 points (1st in Triple and 110H, and 300H and 6th in the Shotput, 7th in long jump
Bensalem: 48 points (2,5 in the 400, 1st in the 4x800 and 4x400, and 2nd in the open 800m, and second in the 200m.
Gateway: 46 points (1st in the 100m and 4x100 and second in the 110H and Shotput, and 5th in the 200m, and 5th in the LJ)
Seems as though Bensalen has won the team title by just two points over Gateway. Gateways top 200 runner missed finals which is real tough, but they have 3 of the 4 4x100 members returning, so they should be a great squad again next season.
Really great competition all around today. Congratulations to all the athletes who participated today.
I'm going to say this now and I hope people hear it, the conditions today were not fun, today was about getting a W. But PA has depth and has talent. I strongly encourage everyone to come out to the Henderson distance festival. With a loaded 800 we could definitley see a 1:50 or under.
In the mile with a rabbit out front we could see a sub 4:10.
In the 3k or 32 we could see 30+ guys break 9:20 for 3200m without a doubt in my mind.
The state has a ton of talent this year, it is incredibly deep. If the state joins up to go after some fresh, fast times, we could see some of the best performances in state history.
Think about it.
What happened to Norris?
ReplyDeleteFrom watching the race online he looked exactly like he did last week. With out 400 to go he was in 4th, and I was watching with my younger brother and turned to him and was like wow, Norris looks dead. He didn't have the pick-up he usually does. He swung outside with 300 to go and tried to make a move and just didn't have it.
Delete--ForrestCRN
A lot of guys just didn't have it today. There were several that could have been among the top 8 that were way back.
DeleteI wouldn't say that. I think in these intense conditions the best and toughest will rise to the occasion in almost all cases. Russell rose to the occasion and ran gutsy as did Wilson. It didn't get the a victory, but they put it all out on the track.
DeleteNot sure who else you're referring to in the 3200, cause the results were not shocking at all, especially watching the race play out.
--ForrestCRN
Not naming names but there's at least 5 guys in the 3200 who probably had realistic medal aspirations and had a rough day ending up over 10 seconds out of 8th.
DeleteGreat job by Jaskowak today for a big comeback race to play 3rd. This guy always shows up. As does Harriman who ran 1:56.0 in the 4x8, but it's a tough double.
ReplyDeleteMajor props to Sam Williams with 5 outdoor medals in 2 years. Placed 4th in both the 16/32 last year and 3rd and 6th respectively in them this season plus a 4x8 leg. That is unreal, especially with this wind.
As for team title hopes Bensalem is looking really solid. Although Gateway did win the 100.
--ForrestCRN
I like to see a fast race with a rabbit with Russell Tom and Jack in it. Im kinda tired of seeing people win off of slow paces, it gets extremely boring. Russell kept the race from being slower than the AA race, which is sickening to be completely honest. It sucks to be him because he's been the only person all season who's willing to work for their time, I can't wait to see him next year with a developed kick. Ive been rooting for him since his Manhattan race in Xc so its a bit disappointing to not get to see him race against people who put everything on the floor like he does. That aside, Jack knows how to win a race and I guess that's what states is.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see a rabbited race as well, but conditions were horrible today in terms of wind. Russell has a lot of guts and he laid it on the line and I respect him for that, he could have settled in with everyone else and kicked to 3rd place but he went for the gold.
DeleteThat being said, running the big meets is about getting the wins and Huemmler and Coyle know their strength is in their kicks and would be stupid to do anything else. I don't fault them at all.
In these conditions 4:16 is actually pretty quick.
It was a very predictable 1600.
DeleteI'm sure Russell has to be everyone's favorite guy to race with because he is responsible for the PA #1 times in the 3200 and the 1600. If Russell didnt drop the 2nd mile down a lot at the Henderson invite then shearn wouldn't have run a 9:04. We all know no one else was going to drop it. Same with the 1600 at the warrior invite, 2:08 first 800 so he dropped the pace down a lot and that helped Ritz run a 4:12. I bet he's been thanked by a lot of people.
DeleteGateway still has Montae Nicholson (23' 1.5" PR) in the AAA Long jump. Bensalem don't count those points yet!
ReplyDeleteYikes! Boys AAA team title comes down to the end...Bensalem wins the 4x4 by .07 of a sec...Zaza gets 7th in the LJ...and Montae Nicholson practically equals his PR in nailing 3rd on the LJ for the Gateway Gators (23' 1.25") ...Gateway gets 46pts but Bensalem's win-by-a-hair in the 4x4 gives them the 48 to edge Gateway. Congrats to all.-sverige55
ReplyDeleteOh wow! That's unbelievable!!! Fantastic job by both teams and congrats to Bensalem for the win. They're a great group of guys.
DeleteAs for Russell, he's a really gutsy runner and it pays off in XC since paces are slower. He's still developing that speed strength for these faster events. He'll be a 5k/10k guy in college.
Not to start looking forward too early, but next year's XC is going to be sick in AAA.
As for the season's end, I'm with Etrain, I hope a bunch of these runners come out to Henderson, because I do believe sub 9 and sub 4:10 is possible. This is one of the deepest PA years in a long time and it's wonderful to see such great competition across the state. I wonder if a team sets up a Festival much like Henderson's out west so we can see something big from those guys as well.
It was wonderful to watch the state meet online. Guys ran really hard in tough conditions and that's all I can ask for as a fan, so thank you. Especially to my boys James Zingarini and Ross Wilson for putting it all out there today for your 4th and 2nd place finishes. You make CRN alumni proud.

Minor correction on the Gateway point total review above: The runner not making finals was Cam Gray in the 100m eliminated in rounds. Rivera got through to final 100m and when Mathis FS'd, Rivera won. Jae'Lyn Means ran 200/400 in invites all year and made it through to 200 finals to get 5th as you note. Montae Nicholson got 3rd, not 5th in the LJ. The 4x1 is Rivera, Nicholson, Means and Cameron Gray always anchors-maybe that's why you thought he was the #1 200 man who missed a race. Rivera is the only senior on the relay. Anthony Bauccio got 2nd in the shot and Montae got 2nd in 110HH behind Zaza and 3rd in the LJ ahead of Zaza and Brooks. Zaza's HH was SWEET.
DeleteHow did the mile play out?
ReplyDelete-RTJ
Shettler books it from the gun. Had about a 10ish meter lead on the pack at 800m. As soon as the pack came through the 8, RUssell charged to the front followed by Hummeler and Coyle. Russell and company were leading and pushing the pace after the first 100m of that 3rd lap. Zingarini makes a move on the back straightaway to contend with the pack as well. 4 guys in a line as they go into the next lap. Russell leads it into the 200-300 mark and Hummeler and Coyle take over from there.
DeleteFrom the replay of the 1600, it looks like Moy gets tripped up from an illegal pass from someone and almost goes down in the backstretch. What's with these PIAA officials? Does anyone care about the integrity of this meet anymore? smh
DeleteIt looked questionable, but maybe not illegal. Officials took heat the day before for the Jewett dq, so they were probably afraid to call anything unless it was blatant...well that and the fact they don't know what their doing.
DeleteErase all you want but IT IS WHAT IT IS.......
ReplyDeleteDidn't the 800 get a false start over pushing and elbows too? Who was in on that?
ReplyDeleteOk no bias here so hopefully this comment won't be deleted...
ReplyDeleteI'd just like to put out some facts about the 800 yesterday and the athletes who ran.
1. Kunzweiler was very close to the curb, but from what I can tell he never stepped on it.
2. The pack of the three was very tight, so contact may have been incidental and nobody meant for anybody to fall.
3. In an interview, Kunzweiler said "I was getting ready to kick and someone right behind me clipped both my feet at the same time"
From reviewing footage and photos I know for a fact that the only person behind him was Zach Brehm.
4. Many things point to Brehm being at fault because of his history this season with two disqualifications but we will honestly never know what really happened.
5. Brehm said "The whole season I've been chasing him, I knew today would be the day to see if I could finally catch Alec Kunzweiler."
So if he really wanted to see if he could catch Kunzweiler, then there would be absolutely no reason for him to trip him.
6. Nobody has mentioned Rivera - he was not giving Kunzweiler any extra space. They were both in lane 1 with Brehm right behind.
7. Kunzweiler certainly may have tripped on his own feet. It wouldn't be the first time we saw that at the meet.
8. There was an official less than 2 meters away when the incident occurred, and he certainly made the best call he could.
No matter who, if anybody, caused Kunzweiler to fall, I'm sure almost all PA track fans would have liked to see that race play out to the line and it is truly unfortunate to see that fall.
The replay showed he didn't trip over his own feet, he didn't trip on the rail. There was contact.
DeleteThen the question becomes was it incidental or not?
DeleteNo runner would ever purposely take out his competition. No runner would want to be remembered as the person who won because they knocked someone down.
DeleteI'm sure that every athlete in the race wanted all 12 to finish strong, because in a state championship you want to know who the best runner is. It's not about pushing to win, it's about seeing which man can cross the line first.
It was sad to see Mr. Kunzweiler fall at the corner, because he very well could've won. However, there was no malicious contact between any of them, just all out racing where it appeared that multiple legs got tangled and he went down.
I hope that people realize that Brehm and Kunzweiler have a mutual respect for each other. They were hugging and talking for an extremely long time after the race and the Carlise/CV papers showed that relationship. Neither runner wanted what happened to happen and I'm positive neither did Rivera or any of the other 9.
“I need to get bigger. I knew what I wanted to do mentally, but that was the most physical race I’ve ever been in,” Brehm said. “When it’s down to the finals, everybody is out for blood. The medal stand is the goal and everyone will do whatever it takes."
DeleteQuote from Brehm after states last year after getting pushed around...
You quoted him in an attempt to make him look bad, which is really in poor taste, whomever you are.
DeleteLets look at other quotes from that article:
“I’m an overachiever. I take everything coach Boardman says and take it to a new level. I’m ready for next year and I want to be on that medal stand right next to (Cumberland Valley junior) Alec Kunzweiler.”
"While Brehm never went out and actually said it, he clearly looks up to runners like Kunzweiler from CV."
“I work good with goals, there’s plenty of numbers to chase and motivation to train,” Brehm said. “I’m hoping for our 4x800 team to come back next year. I want to do what Kunzweiler did and put my team on the medal stand.”
So you can see that he clearly has the utmost respect for Alec Kunzweiler.
--ForrestCRN
Where there's smoke there's fire.
Deleteor a cigarette, or burnt popcorn...
DeleteHonestly no intent to tarnish Brehm's name. He is ceartainly an incredible athlete, and he and Kunzeweiler clearly respect each other. All I'm saying is that it is a but suspicious to see him say that and then the next year the runner en route to a top 3 medal for sure falls down. ForrestCRN, I really didn't mean to take that quote out of context.
DeleteThis State Championship has been one of the weirdest Championships of them all. Why?
ReplyDelete1. A favorite to win the AAA 800m, Jeff Wiseman doesn't even make the finals
2. A favorite to win the AA 1600m, Curt Jewett gets DQ'd in the prelims
3. A favorite to win the AA 800m, Shawn Wolfe trips and falls and doesn't even make medal stand
4. Penn Relays Champ, Indoor Champ, All-American, Max Norris barely makes the podium
5. A favorite to win the AAA 800m, Kunzweiler trips and falls and doesn't make the podium
6. Winner of the AAA 800m, Zach Brehm, is a sophomore with a spotty history of DQ's. He is next to Kunzweiler as he falls. (This does not mean that Brehm intentionally pushed him. We will never know).
7.The AAA XC state champion doesn't make top 5 in his event.
8. The girl who has won a state title in every year she has run, falls a few feet before the line. Baton comes out of her hands and goes over the line. Nothing they can do about it and her relay is DQ'd.
It was disappointing to watch at some points. I know some races could've gone very, very differently. But that's just how life goes.

ReplyDeleteCan someone post link for Boys 800m AAA ?
ReplyDeleteI'm currently working on a compilation of screenshots that I took online while watching the meet live. I do not have a video, but these 14 pictures taken from the replays put out a good picture of what has occured. I'm also writing up what each picture means and where you should look to see what could have potentially caused the fall. If anyone would like to see it e-mail me at fk246898@muhlenberg.edu and I will send you what I have. I'll be done in about 30 minutes.

Watching the replay of the 800, Brehm's knee hit kunzweiler's foot and the Brehm's foot hit kunzweiler's foot and this caused kunzweiler's to trip over his own feet. Even if it was accidental, Brehm should be dq for recklessly running up on kunzweiler and not passing on the outside.
ReplyDelete100% agree - From NFHS rules book
Delete"Interference is any action by a competitor that unfairly changes the course or natural running rhythm of a competitor during a race. This may include bumping, tripping, or running across the competitors path.
Penalty: Disqualification from the event.
Agree too. How did the official miss it, he was right there to be looking for exactly that type of thing.
DeleteIf every case of interference was called during an 800, the results would contain 12 DQs and 0 finishers. Runners are too close to never bump, trip, or cut others off. The 800 was a sad event to see because a runner was fell to the ground, but nothing about that race was out of the ordinary except for the fall. No one should have been DQed
ReplyDeleteTo have the start called back due to someone pushing/elbowing was also out of the ordinary.
DeleteHow is that out of the ordinary? As an 800 guy there have been so many starts of mine that are called back due to pushing. It's the nature of mid-distance events, you gotta get out.
Delete--ForrestCRN
It was also called back because not all of the runners had become set on the line. Some runners who didn't approach the line as quickly were put at a disadvantage to the other runners
DeleteThe 800 should be run with olympic starts. It's not because it's inconvenient. That's the real issue here.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else see Logue almost go down the first lap? It looked like brehm stumbled on the inside and used Logue as a way of standing up. You can tell it was an accident because there was a tight pack but I'm surprised this wasn't talked about either following the trend.
ReplyDelete1. Leave Brehm alone... at that point in the race I'm sure he was too tired to try and devise a plan to sabotage a runner that he basically idolizes. From personal experience of runners stepping on the back of my spikes... they almost always go down if I go down. It would have been way too risky for him to do that and not go down as well.
ReplyDelete2. The officials aren't calling any races any way. Honestly, they couldn't care less who wins. They just do their jobs and leave. They call things that they think are necessary.
3. I do agree, this has been an odd state meet, but a good one. Whoever is using the excuse "the wind is the reason so and so didn't win blah blah blah" that's almost like saying "I didn't win the race because it was at Hershey, not Lehigh." Wind is good for a state meet, it let's the toughest and smartest runners win. Whoever is the hungriest gets the W.
4. No excuses for these runners. If they went out fast and died, it is what it is... don't make excuses for them, come on. They are way too talented and would never make excuses for themselves, much less want someone else doing it for them.
5. Sucks to be in AAA next year in XC... Henderson is going to run train on just about everyone unless someone steps up big time.
