So I know I have been lame with the meet recaps but I have been super busy as of late and I'm probably neglecting a little too much work right now but I figure I owe you guys a little something to recap and look ahead. I figured you would rather have me right something like this than try and half-heartedly finish the bracket meet recaps, some of which have already been eliminated from the bracket. I'm a big fan of the NCAA tourney right now (I was actually just at 2 games in Philly last night and was sitting a few rows back from LaSalle alumn Tom Trainer but he had no idea I was there) so I'm hoping we can see some upsets in the March Madness Bracket we got going on here. Keep on voting! Also the fantasy info is coming, I'm just not quite sure when. I am looking to do some type of draft starting maybe this Friday? I still have to figure out I'm going to make the draft in the most efficient way because I have people both with and without facebooks but we have a great group now up close to 10 people! If you want to get in on the draft I will need to know no later than MARCH 26th @ MIDNIGHT. If you don't let me know by then you won't be involved. I'll be sending out an email/facebook message soon to those who have already contacted me to let you know what is happening.
But anyway let's talk about the real stuff and get out of the fantasy.
First off at Tim Cook we saw a nice early season duel between Jon Colwell and Zach Brehm to the tune of 4:28 to 4:29 with Colwell taking the victory. A solid time for cold conditions and early season running. Brehm looks to have had a busy day with the 800m and 4x8 also likely on his schedule. Liam Corcoran is a name to watch this outdoor season, he was third in that 1600m with a 4:39 but was sub 9:30 last year in the 3200m and an XC state medalist. A surprising run by Williamsport Area who narrowly beat out Carlisle in the 4x8, both squads running 8:19. Hershey was third in 8:27.
At Upper Darby relays West Chester East easily won the 4x1600 in 18:56. Meanwhile Starth Haven ran a solid 8:18.15 to beat out a state squad in St. Joe's Prep (8:23). Father Judge, a state qualifier in the 4x8 indoors, ran 11:05 to win the DMR.
At the Pirate Invite, the Pennridge boys showed they are still in sick shape. They easily won the 4x8 with a B squad running around 8:40, 1-2'd the mile with Logue dominating in 4:25 and Masgai running 4:41 for second, and added the top 4 spots in the individual 800m for good measure behind Matt Shulberger's 2:04.
In other news around the state, Christian Kardish opened up in a dominating 2:04 800m mark and his teammates ran an uncontested 8:29 without him. Possibly a team that can hit a Penn Relays mark in the 4x8 going forward because of their small school status.
Now, let's look ahead to PW. I'll be home a day late to catch the races live, but the meet should be a good one. A lot of guys on the verge of break out performances should have a chance to shine in a competitive meet. The prize of the meet should again be the 3200m where any mark under 9:25 would be incredibly impressive. Remember, last year Sam Hibbs was beat at this meet in a sub 9:30 mark. He went on to become the dominant state champion.
The hype around the meet should center around the boys with O'Hara across their chest as Dan Savage, indoor state 3k medalist with a sub 8:40 mark, will battle his teammate Kevin James to headline the show. Savage is also coming off a 4:16 split on the DMR anchor. The O'Hara boys both have 3200m PRs down around low 9:20s, but both were beat in the last 3200m they ran by their teammate Jim Belfatto, who is hoping to hold on to his O'Hara school record in the 32. He will also be in the race fresh of an indoor season down around 1:55-56 and 4:20 in the mile. He has a low 9:20s Pr as well. Ernie Pitone and Chris Pastore will also toe the line for O'Hara. Pitone has dramatic improved his speed this indoors with a great 4xMile split at NBIN. He was also sub 9 indoors in the 3k. Chris Pastore is an XC stud who can run well under 9:40 in the right race. Not to be forgotten, Matt Hayes from O'Hara will look to help the squad but an absurd 6 guys under 9:45 in the 32 in March. Very fast.
But the race isn't just about the 5th team in the nation in XC. Conner Quinn will look to follow in his former teammate Sam Hibbs footsteps this outdoor season, and has the potential to do so after easily the best indoor season of his career. He ran an 8:40 at the state meet and showed off some improving speed. He has a 9:19 PR, but may still be up in mileage and training intensity considering it is early in the season. Quinn's rival and friend Jack Macauley who sports a 9:15 PR will also jump in the race looking to get a fast time. Macauley was up and down this outdoors battling injury and sickness but has the best PR of anyone in the field and can be dangerous in a kickers race.
But perhaps the biggest name in the field is Ben Ritz, fresh off another out of nowhere mile bombshell, Ritz dropped a 4:14y at NBIN for the fastest open mile of anyone in the state. Ritz ran 4:12 and 1:54 last year outdoors but also added on a low 9:20s mark early on at Henderson last year. He has the wheels to run away from the O'Hara boys if he lets them do the work out front. If Ritz is fit enough to handle a grueling and fast pace at PW this weekend he could surprise everyone and be around 9:20 with a finishing kick.
Also in the field are guys like Chris Cummings and Matt Willig who were great in XC as well as sleeper picks like Thomas Doran who has really come on strong in recent weeks with a solid indoor season and a great finish to XC. Ryan Grace and Pat Hopkins are a few other names that could surprise. Remember this was the race Zach Trama broke out in a year ago. I'm sure Chris Cummings has that in the back of his mind.
But there is more exciting distance action to be undertaken. In the 1600m we will see some of O'Hara's other middle distance runners moving a tad up in distance with Peter Biche, Nick Smart and Jimmy Boyle toeing the line. It is a similar move to what Belfatto did a year ago when he won the race and also Hong Cho who won it before Belfatto. Trey Crump and Eric Diestelow both were very solid in the mile this year indoors and although they didn't quite pull out the SQS they will toe the line in a solid field of 1600m runners with goals of winning. The class of the field may be Nick Scarpato from Springfield Delco who had a very nice indoor season and helped his 4x8 get on the radar as well. he has some wheels and is waiting for a breakout day. Sam Ritz, Ben's younger brother, should look to make some noise. He has a low 4:20s PR which is the best in the field. UD's Francis Ferruzzi won the 32 at this meet last year and will look to recapture that momentum with a win in the 1600m at this year's meet. Pat Hopkins, Adam Mussetti and Jabari Freeman should all mix it up with the group as well.
In the 800m, Jeff Wiseman is the headliner of the field, coming off a big 1:53 PR run at indoor states for 3rd. He is joined by fellow state medalist Jon Lewis who is looking to drop his 1:56 PR in early season action. Lewis should push the pace and help keep things fast given his 400m background and fast PR. That may open the door for someone else to hang on to the quick pace and take home a big personal best. Among the runners in contention are Graham Allen from Springside, Jae Kim from Upper Dublin, Adam Musetti from Spring Ford, Nafees Norris from Del Val, and Nathan Willis from Friend's Central. Billy Wolffe seems to fall inbetween the Wiseman and Lewis group and the group of potential break out performers, having already accomplished a decent amount over his years at GValley. It will be interesting to see if he can take the next step into 1:55 range at this meet.
Overall it should be an exciting meet with a lot of potential to meet the new stars of the outdoors season! Let the games begin.
John Lewis starting off in the 800. I think he realized that his states performance could have been so much better if he was more experienced in the 800. It was very Sam Ellison-esque. Hopefully he gets lots of practice this year and learns the race so he can drop a fast time outdoors.
ReplyDeleteSam Ritz in the 1600. That kid has talent. He was better in the 800/1600 his freshman year than Willig and Magaha. He will be dangerous. Diestelow will be good too. He's a sophomore as well. He dropped great XC marks and countless 4:33-4 opens and splits indoors. Solid 1200 marks as well.
The 3200 is just nasty. Easily the most deep 3200 we will see until the Henderson invite. We should have a good number of runners under 9:50 if the conditions are ideal. O'Hara unleashing all of their fire power in this one. I'm sure they will be looking fly as always each of them rocking a different uniform.

Will O'HARA run the A squad 4x8
ReplyDeleteWhy is CV only listed in 4x8,are they not running individual events.
ReplyDeletewow didn't even notice them buried in there, my bet is that they r trying to get a fast time for penn, probably a solid time this week and a big drop next week if they are in the right race
Deleteother teams that don't have top guys in the individuals that are likely stacking relays include:
DeleteHGPrep (4x8)
GFS (4x8, DMR)
St. Joe's Prep (4x8)
The Haverford School (4x8)
Upper Merion (4x8)
Odds are given the projected depth of the DMR field vs. the 4x8 field the 4x8 will be the fast relay.
CV 4x800 is running to hit the Penn Relay 4x800 qualifier. Only the boys team will be in the meet.
DeleteBilly Wolffe has split a 1:55 various times, it should be interesting to see what kind of shape he is in this early in the season.
ReplyDeleteBilly runs his best when it's hot. I think he will go around 2 flat this weekend and then drop big times at the Henderson Invite and districts.
ReplyDeleteI don't think O'Hara will run their A 4x800. They should already have a DMR spot secured for Penn Relays and all the members of their A 4x800 are running. I assume it would be Savage, James, Belfatto, and Boyle. They're much more suited for a DMR.
GFS has a better DMR in my opinion, but seeing all of those teams in the 4x800 makes me think they will go 4x800 this weekend and DMR next. It's hard to run the DMR alone. GV relays is a great place to attempt to make penn relays. It's cutting it close, but if you know you can make it having a bunch of good competition definitely helps.

Quetsion: On the side it says RTJ region? What's that mean? Having something to do with me? I just started reading again like 2 days ago so I have no idea what that means.
ReplyDelete-RTJ
I just named all the regions after the top commenters on the blog, just meant to be a signal of respect and appreciation for your comments and contributions to the blog and kind of a cool little shout out haha nothing more expected or anything haha
Deleteall the distance individual races are after the dmr
ReplyDeleteThanks a ton, Jarrett! That means a lot!

To RTJ, the Great Valley Relays is too late to uodate your time for Penn.
ReplyDeleteI heard WC East's Diestelow plays baseball in the spring.
ReplyDeleteAnd? He's not the only kid to do dual sports in a season. Guess we'll see if he can handle it.
DeleteHe's a silly boy
DeleteI haven't heard of any distance runners dual sporting it but I'd say it's not going to work for most.
DeleteYea, he should just quit baseball
DeleteI've known a few kids who dualed xc and soccer and then track with club soccer in the spring. Also know a few kids who would like to do that, but their coaches forbid it & force them to choose. Probably smart when you consider all the running & contact associated with soccer. Baseball is tame comparatively, just a time drain.
DeleteUnless his baseball team can win the Stanley Cup then he should just quit baseball.
DeleteMy bad, I meant the Super Bowl
DeleteMarissa Sheva plays soccer year round along with track/xc. She's equally good at both, no exaggeration. If you can be one of the best female athletes from pa for track and play at the same level for soccer then that means playing 2 sports in the same season is possible
DeleteQuit outdoor and play baseball. XC and Indoor bring plenty of running/competition.
DeleteMarissa is also committed to psu for soccer already where she will run just track not xc because off soccer.
DeleteDude, I think you should quit baseball, cause like, its totally lame, and like track 4 lyfe
DeleteGood luck with that Marissa. PSU soccer has spring training committments too. I've known div. 1 athletes who were told they could do everything they wanted but when it came down to it, the sport that came up with the bigger share of $$$, pressured them to quit the other sport. They pretty much own you.
DeletePlay the one you like better, life is to short to be trying to please everyone.
DeleteDo what that person said ^
DeleteIsn't that what they are doing?
DeleteNotice that Diestelow ran at Rustin on Wednesday.
Baseball's pretty lame anyway. Imagine he could easily do both. Depends on if his coaches are willing to go along. He's a good runner, not at the elite level but good enough to maybe qual for something.
DeleteHe's also a sophomore, remember that, so being a 4:32 miler indoors is pretty impressive. I can see him going 4:20 mid by the end of the season, which would be a solid mark.

I’m talking in general and not about Diestelow or Sheva specifically, because I don’t know about them or if they are really in two sports, but I’d shy away from dual sports. I suppose it’s possible to do soccer & XC if they work out with the soccer team and just shows up for XC races, maybe do a long run on the weekends. Baseball/track might work if they’re just a pitcher and only show for games they pitch, do their bullpen sessions before track practice. But in my opinion it’s not worth it. Half of the fun of being on the teams is the camaraderie and joking around that goes on during bus rides, or in between interval workouts for running or sitting in the dugout/hanging around the cages during baseball and you’d miss a lot of that. And it’d be tough to gel with any team if you’re missing practices/games/meets. Not to mention the increased risk of injury or burn out. It’d be pretty cool to be talented enough to be on both teams but if it were me, I’d pick one or the other and I’d suspect most coaches would recommend that too. Just my two cents.

That's how we made it my junior year at the Great Valley Relays. We had to run in the wind and pouring rain all alone and we just made the time we were given. They may have changed it since then, but that's how we got in. Senior year we just used indoor times.

Come awesome college results:
ReplyDeleteNed Willig runs 3:45.53 in the 1500 @ Stanford Invite (heat 2)to place 4th.
Eric Futch was 7th in the finals of the 400H in 53.05 @ Texas Relays. He ran 52.03 in the prelims to win his heat by over a second.
Luke Lefebure ran 3:52.14 to place 10th in heat 6 @ the Stanford Invite
Nick Scarpello ran 14:23.08 in the 5k @ Stanford Invite to place 7th in heat 4
Ryan Gil ran 9:05.28 in the 3k Steeple @ Stanford invite to place 10th in heat 2
Matt Fischer ran 14:01.23 in the 5k @ Stanford Invite to place 10th in heat 2 (Nick Crits DNF'd)
--ForrestCRN
Ryan Horgan ran 3:59.97 in the 1500 @ Raleigh Relays to place 6th in section 4
DeleteMatt Dallago ran 3:53.95 in the 1500 @ Raleign Relays to place 1st in section 3
Nate McClafferty ran 3:52.10 in the 1500 @ Raleign Relays to place 2nd in section 2
Zach Greth ran 30:31.70 in the 10k @ Raleign Relays to place 15th
--ForrestCRN
I'm guessing that's a huge PR for Willig. Lefebure too. Speaking of dual sporting, I heard in high school Lefebure passed on XC for soccer. Had he ran XC in 2010 that might have been another WCH state championship.
DeleteThat's how Lefebure hurt his foot senior year, in a soccer game.
ReplyDeleteNed's 1500s conversion is a 4:02.6 1600 and 4:04 mile. About a 10 second PR for Ned.
Who knew Lefebure had 1500 endurance? Good for him. I don't think he would have made the Varsity XC team though.

Can we get some meet updates from today???
ReplyDeletejames ran 9:15 and ritz ran 9:19
DeleteCV goes 802
ReplyDeletemiller 202
st peter 203
coburn 156
kunzweiler 158
If only Penn and Brown would race! Willig ran 3:45 yesterday and comes back with 1:50.20 in the 800 today. Magaha ran 1:50.09 for 4th place at the Raleign Relays.
ReplyDelete1. HUGE race by Kev James! I would love to know where he took off. That's just moving! Wasn't too shocked by the time, but man it's excited to see. Really nice race by Ritz as well. (and the younger Ritz in the 1600)
2. Really solid times from that meet, it's still early, I wonder if the O'Hara guys have taken any time off...
3. Luke Jones runs 4:37 and 9:59 double, not great from a great XC runner, but it's a good start to his season (he doesn't race indoors). Look for him to drop a lot of time in a couple weeks
4. Seems like Diestelow continues to roll, running 4:30 in the 1600 to match his mile PR from indoor (4:32). No idea if he reads the blog, but if you do, don't listen to these guys. You're a high schooler who is a great track runner. No idea your baseball talent, but if you love to play the sport, go for it. A lot of guys at CRN and I'm sure other schools play other sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, ect. You'll run in college most likely and you can run/road race anytime, you don't often get the chance to play baseball.
5.Solid splits from CV. I bet the run low 7:50's at Penn Relays. Coburn has really stepped it up after a shaky XC season. Pretty pumped to see them compete on a bigger stage. Maybe with teams like Bensalem at Penn.
--ForrestCRN
Thanks Forrest, I do read the blog but haven't really posted until now! I felt like with all of the comments going on it was time to say something. The advice is really encouraging and RJJL pretty much described my situation perfectly. I'm solely a pitcher, and I go to baseball to bullpen ect through the week and for games. As for the posts above that say its better to pick one sport or other, I'd tend to disagree. Yes you miss out on some stuff, but you also never have to choose between two sports you love. Balancing the two and keeping the mileage up has been challenging, but like many people were quick to point out I'm sure my situation is not unique. There are plenty of people around the state who play multiple sports including some of my teammates during XC and indoor. Personally I'm not sure how everything will play out since this is the first year I've tried both, but so far I'm very excited and can't wait for a fun season!
ReplyDelete-Eric Diestelow
Best of luck in both sports! I'm sure it'll go pretty well. Guys like Ross Wilson and Chris Campbell played basketball and ran 50 or so miles a week during winter and were just fine. You're young and you've got plenty of time :)
Delete--ForrestCRN
Yes, good luck with both. Pitcher is the one baseball position where it could work pretty well. Sophomore year is probably the best year to give doing both a shot and see how it goes. Plus you make a great point, you don’t have to choose between two sports you enjoy. And you get the pride of knowing you’re probably one of very few pitchers taking the mound this spring (at any level) who can go out and run 4:30 mile!
