Brutally hot weather combined with about 7.5 miles on the sand doesn't really make a 10 miler all that appealing. However, some PA alumni and some of PA's up and coming talent ran in the 10 miler at Sea Isle City, where I stayed the weekend. Just figured I'd let you know how everyone did. Some early thoughts from me are that the O'Hara boys are working hard. 10 miles in that weather is no joke. Pitone and Pastore ran the whole way together and finished in the two spots ahead of me. Savage ran a good race up front. Dawson and McCandless are both Olympic Trials caliber athletes as a point of reference. McCandless ran very fast at both a half marathon and a full marathon, Dawson is best at the 10k, he's sub 30. Both are PA alumni. So here are those PA times: After about 30 I'm not sure if I missed any PA alumni or not so feel free to comment!
1. Tyler McCandless, Northampton Alum 54:38
2. Kyle Dawon, Coatseville Alum 54:54
4. John Pickhaver, St. Joe's Prep Alum 56:00
5. Dan Day, Landsdale Catholic Alum 56:42
6. Nick Scarpello, CB West Alum 56:52
9. Mike Garrity, O'Hara Alum 59:21
11. Phil Celona, Ryan Alum 59:23
14. James Murphy, St. Joe's Prep Alum 61:09
*18. Dan Savage, Cardinal O'Hara Senior 61:49
20. Dave Moyer, Boyertown Alum 62:08
22. Austin Gregor, CB South Alum 62:05
23. Terrance Murphy, St. Joe's Prep Alum 62:31
*28. Jadon Sargeant, St. Joe's Prep Senior 64:22
29. Steve Hand, Haverford Alum 64:24
*31. Ernie Pitone, O'Hara Senior 64:32
*32. Chris Pastore, O'Hara Senior 64:34
33. Jarrett Felix, Upper Dublin Alum 65:19
34. Mike Ciavarelli, Bonner Alum 65:11
36. Quadree Counsel, Bonner Alum 65:59
*38. Drew Pastore, O'Hara Sophomore 66:51
*53. Jim Belfatto, O'Hara Junior 69:37
Also worth noting on the O'Hara squad Jimmy Boyle and Nick Smart worked together to run 76:01 and 75:48 respectively. LaSalle's Jack Magee was just behind in 76:09.
Obviously its hard to know who was all out racing like me and who was just tempoing or trying to get in a good work out like a lot of these guys probably were. I think it is clear that O'Hara was doing some classic pack running as you could see a bunch of their guys grouped at different points in the race. Clearly they have a few youngsters like Drew Pastore ready to step up. We know they have a squad out front, it just comes down to who is going to sneak up to make sure they have 5 guys who have a big day at states. No sign of Kevin James in my brief scan. Hopefully he is healthy.
Matt Hayes Ohara senior 41st 67:42
ReplyDeletefake and gay
ReplyDelete^sorry i was just kidding
ReplyDeleteHey Etrain,, Could you finish your team preview? You said you were going to do the TOP 10 but only did the top 6 so far.
ReplyDeleteI can assure you guys I did not write that not is that true
ReplyDeleteTom Coyle
nor is that true *
DeleteTom
Kevin James ran easy but his chip came off so he's fine
ReplyDeleteToo much too soon from the Ohara boys, risk of burn out. It won't matter though, nobody is beating Henderson this year.
ReplyDeleteWell Dustin Wilson took second last year at Seaisle so it's not to much to soon for the Ohara boys
ReplyDeletehttp://www.compuscore.com/cs2011/aug/sic10mi.htm Last year was also a very impressive year for pa.
DeleteThat would be implying that the Ohara boys are anywhere near Dustin Wilson... Which they aren't, it doesn't matter whether Henderson or Ohara is better in this situation because neither team should be racing this early.
DeleteOhara has a pretty full schedule of big meets; Briarwood, Foundation@Hershey, Paul Short, Delcos, Catholics, Districts & States. Peaking too soon might have impacted them last year.
ReplyDeleteOhara girls do Paul short not the guys
ReplyDeletethey did peak at states, they just had injuries. Savage was 4th at states so I am pretty sure he peaked at the right time.
ReplyDeletethe North penn squads of 07 and 08 that won the state title ran a full schedule competing in every weekend major invitational meets. Brad miles in '10 also ran a full meet schedule and won the indicidual title. Likewise for the Pennsbury girls that won it all last year.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what the competition was like back in 07 or 08 but was there a team anywhere near as good as henderson right now to compete against them? That kind of training might be able to fly if the rest of the state is lacking talent, but it won't fly when there is another team that is arguably better than Ohara's. Not one shred of evidence can suggest that Ohara is definitely a better team than Henderson this year, but, Henderson isn't Thaaat far ahead of Ohara so that gives them a chance. For me Henderson's Reiny Barchet and Tony Russell could even challenge Mr. Savage, just because they are younger and they are probably drop much more time off of their Pr's than Savage is.
DeleteNothing against Savage, the guy is outstanding and clutch. But I think the man to beat in Delcos this year might just be Jack Huemmler.
DeleteIn 2008 North Penn beat North Allegheny at the state meet who finished the season 12th at the national meet NXN that is certainly not a lack of competition ... I think that Henderson has potential but people are being way to quick to crown them when they have proven relatively little
DeleteJack Huemmler sucks
Deletethanks train, I didn't know what what their competition was like for NP back then, and it is really early to make a decision at this point but now Henderson's team isn't just that group of young studs like it was last year. Most of these guys are juniors now with Bobby and Aj as the only 2 seniors on the team. You said in a post a while back, Seniors are the ones who win state championships or something like that. Though it's true in a sort, you also said that the jump from sophomore to junior year is usually the biggest. I just think that Henderson's younger guys are going to improve more. They were already as even as you can get with Ohara, really, Henderson's win all comes down to how fast Russell and Barchet get. Now that they are together there is bound to be a little rivalry going on between them. It's just going to make them a lot faster if they work off of each other.
DeleteNP squads above competed in CB East, Briarwood, Carlisle, Salselium, Manhattan, SOL, District, State and NXN.
ReplyDeleteThey just had injuries? That could have been from overtraining and too much racing. One less injury and they're the state champs.
ReplyDeleteWell Kevin James I think it was was also playing hockey for Ohara during Xc season so that's more beating on his body on top of training but I'm from their league and heard he's not playing so he won't have that problem
ReplyDeleteThey're still not beating Henderson.
ReplyDelete^Nice comment, thought this was about the Ten miler results though....
ReplyDeleteAt this point I don't think many people actually care about the 10 miler anymore, that's why there were only 3 comments on it until someone blurted something out along the lines of Ohara dying by states or something. We're all just waiting for another Henderson Ohara post or something of that matter so we can discuss our views on it. That's the big topic for this XC season.
DeleteO'hara's top five beat Henderson's top five, though barely. If someone has an off day, Henderson wins with their depth.
ReplyDeleteSavage does the 10 miler every year. Look at past results. He probably just got a bunch of teammates to run it. This has been blown out of proportion. It was just a fun ten miler. Savage's pace wasn't even under 6:00. I don't think he was killing it.
ReplyDeleteyeah, but people love controversy. I think everyone is just waiting for another post about either henderson or Ohara again so they can debate, this includes me, the state medal is caught between 2 teams. But next year Henderson has no competition, at all..
Deleteyea that's why O'Hara will do it this year, there is no replacing Savage, Pitone, and Pastore. Henderson knows they will be good for awhile but O'Hara needs to win now.
DeleteDidn't one of the Chestmont/District One favorites from last year run some road races last summer and then end up with a season ending stress fracture
ReplyDeleteQuinn Devlin?
DeleteYup, the best guy to not get a state medal
DeleteI'm just guessing, but he was probably very determined to have a great senior year, he ran a sick five miler in the summer, like 25 or 26. Maybe he was piling on the mileage too, but he got hurt and didn't run any xc meets. Bummer.
DeleteI believe Tom Coyle ran a road race 5k in July and he seemed to last through the season, people ... it's fun to see how people look and which names crop up as factors, but this really means virtually nothing, please don't blow this out of proportion by making it into a big thing ... most of the O'Hara boys ran this race last season and they did just fine
ReplyDeleteHuemmler sucks? xD
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find these people Train?
Unless said sucking accuser was 1) Tom Coyle, 2) Ned Willig, or 3) Drew Magaha, I don't care. It'll be a cold day in hell when you touch me on the track.
ReplyDelete"It'll be a cold day in hell when you touch me on the track"
DeleteUnless I'm missing a famous movie quote, that was the best line I've heard in awhile (no sarcasm). Stay legit man. Haters gonna hate
Damn Jack, I didn't know you were such a G. He probably has a lot of butthurt stored up because he wasn't included in Etrain's top 50.
DeleteFor the record Huemmler is #19 on my top 50 ... http://www.etrain11.blogspot.com/2012/05/abridged-version.html .... all the same I can see why people would feel he is underrated
DeleteSorry, i was talking about the guy who said he sucked, I know Huemmler was on there.
DeleteWow, if Huemmler sucks than I'm really bad. Off the top of my head, he took first in the 800,1600 & 3200 at Delco's outdoors, ran a gutsy second to Magaha at districts and Coyle at States. Was the key distance man on the Delco, District and State Champion Strath Haven team and had a break out year most guys dream of. He's probably a top 10 state xc guy going into this year. Not many with a better resume this year.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm guessing the kid was joking and jack huemler tht was a very cocky statement u should not pay attention to what people say on this
ReplyDeleteJuniors who have a breakthrough year have a tendancy to get conifident. Some then train too hard now that they see more potential, and end up injured. For others there's a lot going on senior year. Many never match what they did as a junior. Who knows if we'll see a Coyle/Huemmler rematch come track, the Magaha/Willig never developed.
ReplyDeleteWoah woah woah. Just to be clear, I don't mean to say I'll be untouchable on the track, all I'm saying is that someone who is talking trash for the sake of being rude under the veil of anonymous clearly doesn't have the respect for the sport required to excel in it.
ReplyDeleteI agree. If you are going to talk trash, at least put your name with it.
DeleteAnd etrain, please do some type of post to symbolize the beginning of official practice on Monday. Like what were your favorite 1st day memories?
There are so many great things about running, particularly at the high school level where young men are molded. Comradery, sportsmanship, developing self-discipline, the value of working hard and the inevitable humbling everyone goes through. Once you’re the man, the others are gunning for you and someone will catch you eventually.
ReplyDeleteAnother guy to watch for is Yannacone from Unionville. He ran a 4:18 - 1600, basically on his own at the Unionville Invitational. Had he run that event at states he’d probably have been right there with Coyle/Huemmler.
ReplyDeleteKev James is fine, he is not injured. I think he took it easy and a lot of chips were getting messed up at the 10 miler
ReplyDeleteNew post soon?
ReplyDeletenew post??
ReplyDeleteWhen did O'hara pick up Nick Smart from Garnet Valley?
ReplyDeletei don't know, i'm pretty sure it happened in the beginning of summer.
DeleteHenderson returns 15 guys who ran a sub 4:50 1600. That's 15 guys with the potential to be sub 17:00 in Districts at Lehigh. Their JV might be good enough to qualify for States.
ReplyDelete......could that actually happen? I mean I guess not because they'd have to be in the varsity race and what not....but you bring up a pretty interesting point
Deletehas this ever happened with a team before?
DeleteThe Henderson 2010 JV team won the JV race taking the top five spots for a perfect 15. Their times probably would have put them in the top 10 teams in the varsity race.
Deletefrom 2010 to 2011 the team was pretty much cut in half. i'm surprised their jv is still so amazing
DeleteOhara jv vs Henderson jv would also be a good match up cause Ohara had a boat load of guys under 4:50 in duel meets from their jv
ReplyDeletethat would be no competition at all what are you talking about? Ohara's jv can't compare to henderson's in any way
DeleteHenderson's JV team averaged 17:06 a man. That kind of average would put you at 17th last year in the District. I expect the District to be better and deeper this year. I added up their points to about 550-560ish in the Varsity race which would put them at 15-17 range. They took 1, 2, 3, 5, 11 last year in the JV race.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget Barchet was out with injury last year. With him healthy, someone gets bumped from varsity. Assume it's Salach and you've got a 16:26 on the JV squad. That brings the average time to 16:51 and the points down to about 420-440, which put them around 10, the same as 2010.
ReplyDeleteThe 2012 team is better and deeper.
salach was a senior, they lost 2 seniors on the varsity team. with reiny back that opens 1 new spot from last year
DeleteI know, we were talking hypothetically about last years JV. If Barchet were healthy, someone else would have run JV at districts last year. I just said Salach would have been the guy but it could have someone else.
DeleteThe two spots this year should be filled by Barchet and Stratman, but you never know with Henderson, they've got a lot of talent pushing to make varsity.
You left me out!
