Weekend Action

There were some interesting results to note state wise this weekend. One of the first things that turned my head was seeing that Vinny Todaro has jumped out to a fast start with a 4:26 opening 1600m, winning the race by roughly 17 seconds. The reigning XC state champion ran 4:16 last spring and was 9th indoors in the mile with a time in the low 4:20s. To run this fast in small meet in December makes me think this guy could beat his outdoor PR indoors this year. I'd love to see him in a Millrose qualifier.

Kyle Francis and Brad Rivera take nice wins for Bensalem. Those are two nice pieces for their relays going forward. Rivera showed nice strength moving up to the mile and beating a very solid runner in Connor Harriman. It was a nice first race back for Harriman, however, and I still believe Harriman's best event will be the 3k. Based on Webb's race in the 3k, I imagine these two guys haven't done a lot of intense training since finishing regionals, meaning we can expect some nice improvements from these guys in the coming months. I like Bodine's mile from Haverford, that time this early indicates he will be down around the SQS at some point this season. A nice start for Alec Brand from CB East. If he can keep up running like this, he adds his name to a long list of 3k state qualifiers. Pennridge and North Penn throw their names into the list for potential 4x8 squads in what is currently a pretty weak field.

In Division II there were some other nice performances dropped. Dan Alexander had a second straight solid individual performance and won the 800 in an SQS. He is a defending state medalist in the 800m. A nice race behind him by Avery Scripture, a sleeper pick in this year's 800m field with a 1:55 800m PR. A solid race for Huemmler, obviously not mind blowing, but his second win of the season and he does it with ease it seems. Pitone, to me, never seemed like a miler, he is better long, but 4:33 is still a great time for him, unfortunately not fast enough to get him to states.

Finally, in the 3k we saw another excellent opening performance. After Macauley and Berry pushed each other to 9 flat performances, we saw Savage and Norris push each other to US #1 and #2 marks in 8:47 and 8:48. That is really impressive for Savage who I would not think would have been able to outlast Norris in a test of speed. I didn't see the race play out, but based on watching Norris at Nats I have to imagine he took it out hard and the beginning, but Savage must have out strengthed him. This is a great sign for Savage, who is now a contender for the state title. Unfortunately, it will probably be a while before we see fast times from either of these guys again. Meanwhile, keep an eye on Ben Szuhaj. He had a killer Footlocker Regionals race and is quickly emerging as an elite PA runner. He just missed the SQS but it's December and he will most likely hit the mark soon. The 3k is stacked. Nice to see GV win the DMR without Willig and Zatlin.

  1. Anyone think there will be a race with all the Footlocker Finalist(pondel,Kennedy,Norris, shearn) and all the NXN guys(savage,Russell, etc) for indoors? I'm guessing 3k but who knows. Anybody know when Pondel, Shearn, or Kennedy will debut?

  2. I highly doubt that all of them will be in the same race, even at States. Shearn, Norris, Barchet, Savage, Pitone, James, Belfatto, and James should all be in the 3k for Indoor States. You didn't say anything about Barchet, Pitone, James, or Belfatto, but I included them because Barchet really stepped it up this xc season and ran a 9:21 at the time trial, Belfatto just broke O'Hara's 3200 record, James beat Pitone 7 out of 10 times this season, and Pitone made States last year in the 3k (didn't hit time, but he was 9:05 and should be able to drop the time to make it).

Pondel, Kennedy, and Russell are still a mystery. I think Russell should go for the 3k, it would be his best bet, but if they are running a DMR/4x800, then he would need to run the mile in order to come back for an effective double. So I don't think he will be running a 3k.

Pondel has never really been a track guy. 4:33/9:36 are his PR's. He ran the 9:36 at his district meet two weeks before running his current 5k PR on the track, 15:32. I'm thinking the longer the better and a 3k just may not be long enough for him to be effective. He has improved a lot over xc (35 second improvement at the State meet and qualifying for nationals as an individual), but unless he can pull a Jenny Guidera and run almost completely equal splits in the 3k, I don't see him making it.

Judging by last year, Kennedy is more of a miler and as of now I say that's his best bet. However, he drastically improved his XC season over the years, which isn't surprising since sophomore to junior year is when huge improvements are usually made. He could use his gained endurance to complement his speed and be a dangerous threat to the 3k or the mile, whichever he chooses. For him, I'd say he should qualify in both and then view the field before making a decision. If all of the names Etrain predicted do make/go for the 3k, his best bet may be in the less deep mile field.

P.S.- Todaro ran what Magaha ran the first and fifth meet. That's pretty impressive that he started off the season that quickly with absolutely no competition. Keep an eye on him to contend with Huemmler, Coyle, and Russell.

  3. Shawn Wolfe opens in 1:59.55 for the 800m relatively uncontested at F&M. This is from a guy who I always viewed as more of a miler. He is a sleeper pick out of Anville Celona. And heck they took 1-2-3 in the meet, so beware of these guys in the 4x8 as a sleeper as well.

    1. Does anyone know the schedule of the F&M invite? Wolfe also ran 9:10 to win the 3k, which is pretty impressive in itself. Just wondering if he ran the 800 or 3k first, but really solid double either way

    1. I also heard you were making a Christmas Special set to include Jimmy Fallon, Mariah Carey, and Mac Emery. Any details on that?

    2. unfortunately only the mac emery part is correct ... and i'm not exactly sure how the show will develop but we are hoping to get a weekly wrap up in addition to answering questions from the readers and debating some of the big debates in the sport ... picture pti but much shorter and with more audience participation ... but like i said it's in the very earlier development stages ... maybe we will have our first one up in January, but unfortunately right now me and my partner in crime don't live within walking distance like we do at school

    3. Maybe we could have a post up with ideas from our audience about what we could do to make it as interesting and informational as possible?

I watched the PXTC show and personally found it very boring, but then again I don't get too interested in girls A results (no offense). The show done by RunJunkie (on flotrack), I think is done quite well, although too short. So maybe a combination of both. We'll take any sugguestions, ect for the show. As Etrain said, we just started discussing it and it's in the beginning stages.
