Why I Retired
At a certain point I knew I was going to have to give up posting even if I didn't like to think about that moment. At first I was contemplating doing it when FVCK track attacked me on penntrack. That was a thought derived from anger, however, not true disatisfaction with posting in general. Plus, that was no way to finish my career, swallowed up in abuse.
I thought after I graduated high school would have been a logical place to give it up but I couldn't resist going back every day to penntrack and posting. Ironically, at my graduation I saw Scott Armstrong in the crowd, a person who I never would have met if not for my double life as etrain. So again I put my retirement on hold.
But last night as I was laying in bed it hit me that I was not in love with penntrack posting anymore. I can honestly say I hadn't been on penntrack in a week at the time which, for me, is a lot. I hadn't been making etrain status updates at all. I was failing in my production of the Oscars which I had had such high hopes for. I knew I wasn't doing the job I needed to as etrain, and I didn't want to retire as an out of touch hanger on. Besides I have overstayed my welcome. I am in college now and penntrack is a high school stat. I never liked when the college freshman came back to my senior prom and I think what I'm doing is similar.
So as I leave penntrack now I still see many quality posters left and the forums are doing better than they have in the past. The oscar nominees alone proved that there are plenty of capable posters left online including runthrowjump who I had the pleasure of meeting at a track meet. The passion these posters have is just as great as mine was.
I'm going to miss being etrain. I have a lot of fond memories thanks to my posting. I once checked in at a track meet and some coach asked me, "Aren't you one of those penntrack posters?" It was one of the best days ever.
But I am still etrain. I still plan to follow the sport only in a different way. I plan to still maintain my fan page and this blog and if my supporters or fans need something from me they will be able to find me.
I am sorry to anyone who in the past I may have creeped out such as Chris Trimble the first time I meet you in Born to Run when you sold me shoes.
Everyone has made me feel very special for just being a glorified nerd who loves track and I can't thank the trainstation enough for being supportive and kind and interested. I have nothing but fond memories.
I will still be accepting signatures on the box as long as people still ask me to sign their coloring books.
Keep penntrack strong, I am now the past and you are the future.
In this game of track and field you can call me Mel Kiper.
Sincerely,
Jarrett Felix

Lyrics
Last name train, first name e,
Homie when I post, even my haters agree,
PA’s got the talent, I’m just tryna rep it,
Got plenty of stars so take the gold and prep it,
So go and get your water bottles ready, fill ‘em,
A new style every race, thrill ‘em,
All the meet promoters wanna land us, bill ‘em,
Man we treat our runs like they insects, kill ‘em,
Had a bad day, the track is my distraction,
The pain feels good unlike my wisdom teeth extraction,
Getting excited makes my heart race, track pun,
Everybodys gotta name, call me etrain one one,
Feel all the wind, its cause we came by,
Step out on the track, we no penguins cuz we gonna fly,
Just ask Brady Gehret how good is a runner’s high,
Indoor, outdoor, man we runnin’ July,
Wise guy,
Chorus
Hatin on my sport man, etrain I’m a poster,
Ain’t no question, I’m about to toast ya,
That’s how running goes,
Big base, quick pace,
Sat back then I took it like Matt Fischer’s race,
We go hard, now you broke like Gil’s toes,
Hit with Sara’s kick, Katie’s elbows,
Runners look so hot, soccer’s not,
That’s why everybody’s got pictures with Bernard Lagat,
We Fernandez perfect splits like a robot,
Yo McGrath stop pretending you just got shot,
Dang, I’m on fire like Wade Endress hair,
Spending all my time at the track like an evil lair,
I’m like Paige Stoner because I make the other girls all stare,
Homie you know we dominate cuz we frickin grew a pair,
Runners, we like it rough,
Ladies we can go all day, Aisling Cuffe,
Yea we were born to run like that Mexican tribe,
Just look it up on penntrack playa and subscribe,
We gonna be the greatest, there’s no if just when,
Yea I mean I’m kind of a pretty big deal, North Penn,
Dang my beats are killin it, man we are so stellar,
But I gotta finish this, I’m out of breath, Will Kellar,
Chorus
Cross training and biking, jogging, hiking,
The only way to do it is fast like I’m on Viking,
My form is so striking, girls seem to be liking,
Run to close too me and I guess I will be spiking,
And I will never stop, til I’m at the tippy top,
Homie take it out hard, I ain’t gonna frickin’ drop,
All you haters may have to take back your posts, flip flop,
Listen to the beat pop, be closer, seat swap,
We never be second, Logan Steiner,
That’s why when we leave ladies upset, Lindsey Rheiner,
We so perfect, they dreamin, and they need a pinch,
Homie we come out in beast mode, Marshawn Lynch,
Sport’s like Drake, Best I ever had,
Got girls thinking about increasing their Miles, Brad,
Man got my track stats to consult,
Gotta make like Usain and Bolt,
Chorus
There they go, packin stadiums for the last four by four,
Applause grow, How fast will they run, Brown, Cheltenham who knows,
Etrain, jport, not track bozos,
We got a sweep like it’s the U of Os,
Dang Bro, What a show,
Eminem and I twins, Jim and Joe,
Homie we got such a huge crew, and I ain’t talkin’ bout boy’s who row,
They been waiting patiently for Mallon’s 800 to drop this low,
Barriers never touched before,
1:49 and still can drop some more,
The man doesn’t just shine he glow,
Makes small fans stand on tippy toe,
Man is a regular Galen Rupp,
Fans Vuvuzela’s, World Cup,
I swear stuff must be staring at Sam Ellison, cuz things are lookin up,
I just go where there will be a show,
Indoor track if there’s too much snow,
Whether pros or joes, I Got money to blow,
These tickets are like my Christmas like ho, ho, ho,
Homie nobody can announce a race like the guys from flotrack,
And nothing ever could give me more fear, when Andrews appears too close on your back,
When he gears up for a final attack,
Holy crap, that kick is whack,
Wheating just as stunned as all my fans,
When I laid down such a sick track, talk smack
Chorus

Chorus

State Predictions: Mile
It’s my favorite time of the year, when the performance lists are out and we know who is running what at the state championships. I was going to try and predict all the events on the girls and boys sides this year, but then I realized how truly little I know about those subjects. Therefore, I decided to stick to what I know best, the men’s distance events, and give more in depth predictive analysis. Here we go.
Mile
The mile will be the first distance event of the day, and things should get off to a fast start. With 18 entries in the race I expect two heats, the first of 9 the second of 9. That will slightly affect the way I see the race unfolding and my predictions.
Projected First Heat Entries:
1 Kennedy, Kiski Area 4:29.70B
2 Segall, Friend’s Central 4:30.89
3 Groh, Lower Dauphin 4:30.30B
4 Trueman, Springfield Montco 4:31.10
5 Horgan, Holy Ghost Prep 4:30.56B
6 Scarpato, Springfield Delco 4:31.56B
7 Waterman, Germantown Friends School 4:32.32
8 Seelaus, Strath Haven 4:31.90B
9 Waddington, CB South 4:32.91
Projected Second Heat Entries:
1 McClafferty, Conrad Weiser 4:20.82
2 Campbell, Council Rock North 4:21.43
3 Endress, Altoona 4:20.93B
4 Schrom, Central Dauphin 4:21.55B
5 Magaha, Upper Moreland 4:24.10
6 Barnhill, Downingtown West 4:24.74B
7 Gregor, CB South 4:26.80
8 Moran, Mt. Lebanon 4:26.37B
9 Libbi, West Chester East 4:29.11
I think the first heat will be won in a time too slow to medal unfortunately. I see too much talent in the second heat and I don’t think it will go out that slow. I expect Horgan and possibly Trueman to lead early, Waterman should be in the mix for the win in the heat. There are a couple young guns in this heat who may have a break out performance as well.
In the fast heat the guys everyone is talking about are the three up front: McClafferty, Campbell and Endress, all with PRs of 4:15.00 or lower for 1600m. I expect that with another race coming later in the day for him Endress will not be eager to take the pace, however I see Campbell, McClafferty and Schrom keeping this thing fast from the gun. Moran should be up in that mix as well. Barnhill and Magaha should hang back at the start and work their way up the pack picking people off. Magaha, however, is fairly unpredictable in his race strategy. A lot of people are talking about Libbi as a sleeper pick in the race, I like him, however I don’t see him making a huge impact at the meet. I have Endress in a very close race taking Campbell at the line with McClafferty just a step behind the two for third. Endress in about 4:16ish, Campbell the same, McClafferty very low 4:17. Then I think Moran will take fourth in about 4:19 or so, holding off a late charge from Barnhill for 5th and Schrom for 6th both in about 4:20. Schrom has the potential for a big race here just like last year when he won the slow heat, but I like Moran as my sleeper pick for this race as long as he doesn’t go out too hard. If Magaha keeps a steady head and races smart he could beat all of these guys in this pack but I see him saving too much and going by a fading Gregor and Libbi for 7th. I see Gregor and Libbi fighting it out for the final medal spot in somewhere around 4:23. Either could take it, but I’ll go Libbi by a nose because I like the fact that he has had some big, confidence building, wins this season.

State Predictions: 800m
800m
There are 35 entries in the mens 800! Wow! Last year they divided 27 guys up over three heats, this year I expect four heats with the additional entries, but we may see three. I see 9 in the first heat, 9 in the second heat, 8 in the third and 9 in the last heat.
Projected First Heat:
1 Dallago, Perk Valley 2:01.06
2 Gibson, Canon-Mac 2:00.47B

6 Dewille, Hershey 2:00.61B
7 Trueman, Springfield Montco 2:01.23
8 Lamour, E&S NS
9 Meterko, Puxsatawney NS
Projected Second Heat:
1 Sheltzer, Friend’s Central 1:59.37
2 Squirees, Penn Hills 1:59.10B
3 Bailey, Penn Hills 1:59.90
4 Witmer, McCaskey 1:59.36B
5 Ferris, Conestoga 1:59.44B
6 England, Easton Area 2:00.63
7 Holder, Chambersburg 2:00.82
8 Cassey, Penncrest 2:00.35B
9 Ahearn, Twin Valley 2:01.04
Projected Third Heat:
1 Cosgrove, McKeesport 1:58.38
2 Urso, Trinity 1:58.60
3 Gonzaga, Archbishop Ryan 1:59.05
4 Gomez, Butler 1:58.46B
5 Trimble, North Penn 1:59.12
6 Lidwell, Altoona 1:58.54B
7 Essex, Conestoga 1:58.64B
8 Jordan, State College 1:58.74B
Projected Fourth Heat:
1 Endress, Altoona 1:53.94B
2 Cho, Wissahickon 1:56.22
3 Magaha, Upper Moreland 1:56.61
4 Moran, Abington 1:56.24B
5 Lefebure, Henderson 1:57.02
6 Krszal, West Allegheny 1:56.43B
7 Flynn, Cumberland Valley 1:56.70B
8 Delahnman, Radnor 1:57.67
9 Timmins, Phoenixville 1:57.14B
The first heat is always exciting because you get to watch a lot of runners just go for it and chase PRs. Normally someone from this heat sneaks on to the medal stand and the guy I see doing is Bekelja. He’s a got a teammate in the heat with him and hopefully they can work together to a fast time with some other guys who go out hard. Bekelja in around 1:56 is my bet, sleeper pick to run quick would be Duda out of Lower Moreland.
The second heat again will just be a bunch of runners going for it which may lead to some fast times. I’ve always been a fan of Sheltzer out of Friend’s Central, but he’s not a guy who is going to push the pace and make this thing fast. I see Witmer ultimately pulling out this heat with a time around 1:57 low, maybe dipping into the 1:56s if the Penn Hills boys take it out hard enough.
Not really a lot of big names in this third heat and a few guys I’ve honestly never heard of. I think Trinity’s Urso is definitely a guy to watch along with Gomez. Deep sleeper might be Trimble who comes from a top notch program for the 800m. I see the winner of this heat again in the 1:57 range, maybe dipping into the 1:56s for the top two guys.
Hot heat should not be tactical this time around like it usually is. Krszal is a front runner and Flynn doesn’t like a slow pace either. Endress will be tired and Magaha I can’t see as a factor in this race on the double, but he is unpredictable to say the least. I think Cho and Moran will both look to make moves about 400m in and Endress and Lefebure will be the only ones to stay with them. I am really on the Endress bandwagon for this double because I think he has proven his fitness time and time again this season, but I think he will not be able to hold off Lefebure in the final straightaway. I have Lefebure winning in around 1:53 high again, Endress second in 1:54 low, Moran 3rd in 1:54 mid and Cho 4th in about 1:54 high. The other guys may mix it up in there and try to snag a medal.
Ultimately when the dust settles I have Lefebure, Endress, Moran, Cho, Bekelja, Urso, Witmer, and Gomez medaling in that order. Flynn with a near miss, same to Timmons.

State Predictions: 3000m
3000m
Good news, there should only be one heat.
Projected Heat:
1 Gil, North Allegheny 8:36.60B
2 Trainer, LaSalle 8:50.20
3 Hartzel, Cumberland Valley 8:52.42B
4 Sileniks, North Hills 9:32.xxB @3200m
5 Greth, Exeter 8:57.89
6 McGowan, Lower Merion 8:58.28
7 Degregirio, Baldwin 8:57.73B
8 Izewski, CB East 8:58.55
9 Steiner, North Allegheny 8:58.15B
10 Koliso, Glenn Mills 8:58.44B
11 Groff, Hempfield 8:59.77
12 Fadale, Selinsgrove 8:59.78
13 Wilkinson, Valley View 9:00.21
Gil is a big favorite but I am not sure I see him pushing the pace early in this race, especially with the DMR late in the day for his team. Most of the other heavy hitters in the race sit back early on like Trainer and McGowan. I think Hartzel will probably dictate pace early with Groff, Fadale, Izewski and Koliso up in the mix as well. Hopefully, Juris and Trainer will be on Gil’s shoulder when he decides to make a move during the race otherwise Gil may get too much of a cushion. I am nervous to pick anyone who ran the 3k last week for a top spot in this week’s race because I feel running too excellent 3ks in two weeks in a row is a very tough job to do. I have Gil winning, I think he has more speed than Trainer and more strength, plus he knows how to win. I do see Trainer having a breakout race and finishing second. Somewhere around 8:33 for Gil, 8:37ish for Trainer. Then I have Juris finishing in third, although I haven’t seen too many results on him I know he has the talent to run quick, probably around low 8:40s. From here I am not too enamored with anyone in the rest of the field, but I am going to with Greth for third and Hartzel for fourth. I have seen a lot more of Greth than I have of Hartzel this season, and I feel Greth has experience winning big races (MoCs last year) as well as placing highly in races with good competition (12th at XC States). For the next spots I will pick Fadale over Groff, most likely again a close finish somewhere in the low 8:50s. I’ll take Izewski for 7th, although he raced the 3k last week, I feel like he performs well at the state meet and maybe will get some good advice from his brother. 8th is a tough pick but I’ll go Steiner by a nose over Wilkinson both in the mid 8:50s range.
Good news, there should only be one heat.

State Predictions: 4x800m
4x800m
There should be two heats of the 4x800m, the first of 12, the second of 11. I also listed the names who I think will be on the relay for each team, although these are not official, just projections.
Projected 1st Heat:
1 Archbishop Wood 8:16.64B
2 Haverford 8:19.34 (Kim)
3 Phoenixville 8:18.50B (Timmons)
4 Chambersburg NS (Holder)
5 CR South NS (Doyle, Garfield)
6 Cumberland Valley NS (Flynn, Hartzel)
7 Easton Area NS (England)
8 Hempfield NS (Groff)
9 Hershey NS (Bekelja, DeWille)
10 North Penn NS (Trimble)
11 Penn Hills NS (Caitlin, Bailey, Squires)
12 Upper Darby NS
Projected 2nd Heat:
1 Abington 7:45.93B (Watson, Smith, Moran, Taylor)
2 CB West 8:01.63 (McGarvey, Bee, Manley)
3 LaSalle 8:04.21 (Muggler, Stone, Stone, Coyle)
4 Penncrest 8:03.24B (Robert, Cassey)
5 Lower Moreland 8:06.10B (Duda)
6 Spring Ford 8:10.72B
7 Pennridge 8:12.19B (Reed, Olindo)
8 Friend’s Central 8:12.78B (Sheltzer, Segall)
9 Holy Ghost Prep 8:13.04B (Horgan)
10 Downingtown East 8:16.14B
11 Strath Haven 8:18.61 (Collins?, Seelaus)
The first heat is made up of a lot of teams very close to the standard that didn’t quite hit it, but should still feature some fast times. A lot of these teams have very capable runners who will be on the double from earlier races which will play a factor. For example, Penn Hills has the pieces to run very quick but I don’t see them doubling very well, especially after last year’s DMR performance. CR South could mix it up with four fresh legs, Hershey returns everyone from a 7:51 last year outdoors as well but they have to key legs on the double. I think Haverford will most likely take down the heat, with Hershey, Cumberland Valley and CR South in the mix. If Penn Hills runs to their potential they will surprise and maybe take a state medal.
The second heat should of course be very quick even with Abington’s legs all doubling back. Assuming Abington is running at full strength (i.e. every member of their A team) it is their race to lose. However, I am picking CB West for the upset here in what should be a very fast race around 7:50 for both squads, maybe a shade under for CB West. I don’t like to pick against Moran on the anchor, but I think a completely fresh set of runners for CB West will clinch the victory. In the chase pack I think LaSalle will take third in a time around 7:55-7:57, they will be in contention until the anchor leg where I do not think they have a stand out runner. Lower Moreland I am picking for fourth in a bit of an upset but I think Penncrest will take 5th, both teams around 8:04, Lower Moreland closer to 8:00. I think Pennridge should run fast here as well, I don’t think they are that far off of Penncrest when Penncrest has runners doubling and Pennridge is fresh. I could see them beating Penncrest, but right now I have them a step off at 8:05 or so. I think the other teams do not have the fresh runners to run as fast as they did in qualifying although I think Friend’s Central and Strath Haven have good runners, I think the tired legs will stop both squads from placing highly. I have Strath Haven still running decent enough to medal in 7th. I’ll take a teams out of the slow heat (I’ll say Haverford 8th) for the final medal position.
State Predictions DMR
DMR
Again one heat, the first time the DMR will feature more than 10 teams.
Projected Heat:
1 Wissahickon 10:35.56 (Cho, Ravetz, Farrell)
2 Henderson 10:33.84B (Lefebure, Andrews)
3 Great Valley 10:36.89B (Willig, Toole, Wolffe, McCary)
4 Council Rock North 10:39.84B (Campbell, Ieburno)
5 Pittsburgh CC 10:41.94 (Gasior, Short)
6 North Allegheny 10:43.15B (Gil)
7 Boyertown 10:45.79 (Kelly)
8 Chestnut Hill Academy 10:47.00 (Wilson, Fuery)
9 Downingtown West 10:48.17 (Barnhill)
10 CB East 10:47.07B (Izewski)
11 CB South 10:50.30 (Gregor, Waddington)
12 O’Hara 10:50.48 (Garrity)
13 GFS 10:51.04 (Waterman)
This should be a great race with Lefebure, I hope, running the 12 and getting the race out quickly. I see him opening up in around 3:08-3:10 with Wissahickon not far off as well as Pitt CC. O’Hara should put up a good start with two very solid first legs assuming they get a top 400 runner in their relay. After the 800 legs I think Wissahickon will have a solid lead if Cho runs the 800 leg. Following not far behind should be Henderson. I am not sure how the middle legs will do for Pittsburgh. The anchor legs should be stacked with talent, but it will be a matter of which team is close enough to hawk down the two front runners. I think Ned Willig and a completely fresh Great Valley DMR will take down the gold with a solid anchor leg from Willig, putting the team around 10:20 for the day. I see Wissahickon taking second, with Henderson nipping at their heels for third also in the low 10:20s. Behind them I expect a big anchor carry from Campbell to get the team to 4th and then perhaps a surprise performance from Boyertown down around 10:30 for 5th neck and neck with 6th place Pittsburgh Central Catholic. PCC has a chance to finish higher if their middle legs have big days. I see Wilson giving CHA a big anchor leg to rocket the team into 7th. I think he will be around 4:15. Finally I see Gil holding on to get the team 8th with around a 4:21 anchor leg.
