Henderson Last Chance Meet

Chester Count Last Chance Meet
When-Tuesday, February 12, 2013
Where-Henderson High School
What-Due to last week’s weather cancellations, we wanted to give people the opportunity to qualify for
States or to compete one last time.  The track is fast.  We must have 5 teams represented in order to
compete.
Cost-$5 per entry.
Entry procedure:  E-mail Kevin Kelly at kkelly1@wcasd.net  your entries.  Entry format in an excel
spreadsheet:  last name, 1st name, school, event, seed time.  Those entries must be received by Tuesday
at Noon.  Last minute entries are discouraged but will be accepted at the meet.
Time Schedule:
Girls’ 4 x 200m-4:30PM
Boys’ 4 x 200m-4:35PM
Girls’ 400m-4:45PM
Boys’ 400m-4:50PM
Girls’ 800m-4:55PM
Boys’ 800m-5:05PM
Boys’ Mile-5:15PM
Girls’ 3000m-5:22PM
Boys’ 3000m-5:35PM
Girls’ 4 x 4-5:45PM.
There may be a long jump.  Time schedule may change slightly based on entries.

This is a great opportunity and I encourage everyone to take advantage. I am hoping to have a list of entries up by Tuesday morning and maybe be able to put up a brief preview or something. If all goes right I will be at Meet of Champions on Saturday at Lehigh as well to cover the meet. We will see how it goes.

  1. Additons to the schedule:
    3:55-Girls' 4 x 8
    4:05-Boys' 4 x 8
    4:15-Boys' DMR

There must be at least 5 finishers per event in order for it to count as a SQS.

  2. In my opinion, this is completely unfair. The western PA kids have to make States the fair way while east PA kids get to do it on an outdoor track. Even with the banked time to hit, the conversion to an outdoor track is much more. The 4x200/4x400 are insanely easy to hit on an outdoor track and the open 400 isn't bad either. Events like the 800 where you'll need stamina either way is a bit better, but not too much. 3k should still be pretty hard, but with the right pack a good amount of kids could go under. The PIAA are pretty anal about rules... I'm kind of surprised they let this fly.

    1. It seems with PIAA having to dip below SQs to fill out heats for the State meet, this is at the very least, as good (better IMHO)an option as that. Who knows how many kids will actually qualify, but it's a good tune up for those who already have.

    2. PIAA doesnt do indoor, PTFCA does

    3. I don't see what's unfair about it, everyone trusted that they'd be able to have the chance to qualify on Saturday but weather didn't permit it. Now they are getting another opportunity. And if the difference between banked tracks and outdoor tracks was a grand as you say it is, why would this be allowed? Be happy that Henderson and coach Kelly are doing this for the state, no one is getting an unfair advantage. The conditions will be colder and you have to worry about wind for races like the mile and 3k.

    4. I hear you RTJ, but I disagree. Losing meets to the weather is unfair, particularly this late in the season. Given the limited time to put something together, it's a great opportunity for runners who missed a chance due to the storm.

Any individual/team that can hit those oversized times in 43 degrees with a 15-20 mph wind across the track, and the feel of a time trial rather than a big meet, deserves to go. I doubt they'll be any qualifiers that aren't worthy of states.

    5. Excellent point, RJJL. Race time temps were in the high 30's and there was a very strong wind on the backstretch. The times were slow and yet the performances of some of the runners were amazing in those conditions. It's possible that the sub 2:02 group in the half would have met the state qualifying time of 2:00.13 in better conditions. The mile and 3,000 showed just how tough it was to run in the conditions yesterday as Tony Russell battled to help set the pace and they were still a bit slow. Yet, Diestelow from East ran 4:32.27 (after running a 3:12 in the 1,200 on the DMR) and Cummings from East ran 9:00.04 in the 3K by himself for the entire second half. They were gutty performances that didn't quite make the state times, but should get them recognized by their peers.

    6. Cummings looked good. He definitely should send Russell flowers or something because he paced him good for well more than half of that race. Also Russells "workout" consisted of an 800, 3k, mile and maybe a 400?

    7. There are several runners who deserve a shout out. Ken Leidal, who in addition to running relays, ran the first mile of the 3000 as the rabbit. I heard he fell in the last relay. Hope he is okay.

Courtney Smith, who ran the 3000 sideways trying to cheer her teammate onto states.

And Tony Russell, who after the DMR, ran the mile with his teammates to try to get to states. Then he ran the 3000 to set the pace after Leidal dropped. Even after his guys dropped off the pace, Russell stayed with Cummings to help him.

I am probably missing some other examples that I didn't see.

    8. Leidal here. Thanks for the shout out. I fell in the 4x4 because I pulled my hamstring coming around the last turn... Had to go to the ER for a broken/dislocated thumb too. I guess it was a combination of the minimal recovery time and the cold. The hamstring really sucks though, because it's looking like I won't get to run at states because of it...

    9. Just heard that Ken Leidal went down in the 4x400- hope you come back strong in outdoor. Watching Russell's selfless "practice" by pace setting and watching Leidal and the other rabbits was great and showed that these runners respect each other and want to see each other succeed. Courtney Smith running sideways, backwards, and cheering on her teammate was probably the high point of the meet...thanks for the reminder whoever posted that above.

  3. Midpenn teams are racing Thursday up at penn state. State College, CV, LD, and a few more. This could be a meet where big times are dropped

  4. Who says teams on the western side of the state can't do this? Get together and clear a track if they have more snow than the east. it's not like they're not allowed to do it. KKelly was proactive about the process and wants to help kids qualify, I think it's fantastic that he's doing this.

Technically with this rule, outdoor times could be run throughout indoor if you get 5 teams to show up, maybe this will happen more often, especially if one weekend the weather is in the 50'sor 60's and have kids hit fast times.

    --ForrestCRN

A league could just get together and host a meet with all the teams to help people qualify, I personally like the idea. I'd rather have all the top guys qualify, not have people left out because a meet got cancelled or they didn't hit an SQS at one of the beginning season meets.

    1. Agree, Forrest. KKelly is an advocate for ALL the runners in PA. Good to have someone so responsive to the needs of the athletes.

  5. Just a thought here.... about states and qualifying standards. How many people are put in the fast heat of the boys mile? is it only 12 like outdoor states? and would Russell's 4:24.-- 1600 time put him in the fast heat? especially if it's only 12 people in the fastest heat.

  6. Funny you should mention this because I have been closely monitoring it myself ... I honestly expect about 10 guys in the fast heat, right now the top 8-10 look like this when u convert bank to flat:
    1. Huemmler 4:16.22
    2. Harriman 4:19.06
    3. Coyle 4:19.87
    4. Stone 4:21.35
    5. Kevin James 4:22.10
    6. Russell 4:23.83
    7. Leidal 4:23.88
    8. Groh 4:24.06
    9. Aziz 4:24.14
    10. Martin 4:24.61

There are a few guys on this list that I don't expect to run the mile either ... Stone immeaditley comes to mind but I also still have questions as to whether kevin james will opt for the mile or the 3k, after the mile at PCLs he is set up really well, but I think his best event is the 3k so it will be interesting ... also depends a lot on the ohara relays

in conclusion, barring something fairly drastic i think Tony is safe for the hot heat of the mile .. the being said, it may a little close for comfort for some people

  7. Time trials are an easy way to show you how much an outdoor track is better. Especially compared to the first meet if you're running the same event. Cold and windy will happen, but it's not unbearable. The PA track classic is a perfect example. It was freezing and extremely windy and there were still fast times dropped there. If you're running on an outdoor track, the times should be faster than a banked track to make States. I do believe it is a better system than just letting teams in like they did in previous years, but I don't think it's a good way. Coach Kelly is extremely generous for doing this though, the intentions were good and if Russell is rabbiting the 3200, that would be even more generous of him. I'd assume it would be so Rimkis and Stratman can make it, but it's still nice for him to try and get a bunch of runners under the SQS.

Russell's 4:24 is good enough for the fast heat. He's currently 10th.

I guess we will see how the meet plays out. Why are there some events for boys, but not girls? Like the mile and DMR. Etc.

  8. I see nothing unfair about this whole things. Way to go coach in stepping up

  9. So I assume the WCEast kids scraped the Albright meet and are now running Henderson? Good news for them, finally a chance to go to a "fast track" and get in some good marks for states. Good luck to everyone competing tonight should be a historic event.

  10. Russell is rabbiting the 3k and the mile, their team is going to set up a fast DMR for people to qualify also.

    1. I believe Malvern Prep had a boy qualify in the 800m. Also given the small # of qualifiers in the 800m I wouldn't be surprised at all if the PTFCA let in guys like Moy and the Spring Ford runner who's name is escaping me at the moment (sorry man) and than also Yannacone who was right off them. That 800 field looks very small on paper right now, especially compared to the mile. Unfortunately the boys from WCE had 3 agonizingly close performances and came up just short in all of them. Real bad luck for them, but I believe they still have a fairly decent shot at getting in for the DM. It will be interesting to see who all does what at MOCs

    2. I know this blog is for distance runners, but didn't the Rustin 200 sprinter make it by a lot? Seemed like the performance of the day. - RJJL

    3. Per PTFCA's list from last week, they raised the DMR time and WCEast and DWest were put in.
