Rankings 9/2

The bolded names are guys that were affected in rank by this past weekend's events. Some guys impressed me a lot, others I think took a step in an expected direction. It is still super early but I think we saw some up and coming studs with wins from Colwell, Pondel, Martin and Todaro ... A solid debut from Brehm and Pennsbury was a monster in their opener. Deluca of course has been on my radar for a while and took a big step in his first race. Sam Webb kind of a similar situation. Barchet may need a bit of time to get back to his old self and the CRN boys have some work to do. Smathers, Williams, Jewett and Jones now know there is plenty of depth in single A and Galassi looks very sharp. Pondel in AA is a scary thought as well. There is much more I can say about these races when pressed, just comment about what you would like to know. Next weekend should really be fun.

    1. I'm trying not to let my bias affect my rankings ... I want to just say that times on XC courses don't effect my rankings. Otherwise the guys who run Viking every year would be considered otherworldly studs. I look at times in XC relative to one another. So if someone runs 15:59 but loses by 30 seconds its not as impressive.

But the recent Francis is off the list right now is because he wasn't a state medalist last year and he didn't race so far this XC season so he hasn't had a chance to really jump anyone.

If he runs well to start the season he will be on the list. As will other guys who started the year on the list but got knocked off just because they haven't run a race yet this fall.

  2. Andrew Steely had a soild win, I think last year was a bit of a down year and he will be back. I think he is list worthy.

  3. Steve Yannacone had quite a poor performance at Immaculata, he got beat by atleast 4 Henderson runners, a Kennett and possibly D-West on the first leg of the race

    1. Yannacone ran the second leg.

    2. I'm pretty positive he didn't...

    3. If you look at the results on PennTrack, they're reversed. The guys in the first column went second, the ones in the second column went first.

    4. I was at the race and saw him run first but ok

    5. I was at the race too, ran the second leg and could have sworn I saw him pass me, but maybe I was mistaken.

  9. You guys are getting away from the purpose and trying to make Etrain stop letting people comment. Quit being immature little children.

Back on topic... Pondel should definitely be higher. He made Smathers, DiSilvio, and Yousif look silly and they are all very talented runners. He could have ran faster, too. Anyone that has a 20 second lead isn't going 100% because they have no one pushing them. I'm not sure how easy/hard the course is, but regardless, he ran a 15:36 to start the season off. Almost as fast as Hibbs/Quinn did last year on the short/easy course of Viking.

    1. Sorry I got a little carried.

I fully agree Pondel was very impressive a 15:36 is a fast time regardless of course when you have a lead that large. He also dropped 34 seconds from what he ran last year but given the point in the season I feel like guys should be moved conservatively in the rankings, so IMO 19 places is a huge drop, despite an impressive race and keep in mind that Smathers dropped many hot times throughout the spring in the 1600 but really blossomed in the end at states with his 4:12 when it mattered most. I would not be surprised to see something similar. this xc season.

  10. I'd keep my eye on Evan Jones from Kennett, him and a couple other guys from his team decided train with us over the summer. His pr last year was a 16:50 and that's with close to no summer training at all. By the middle of the summer he was able to stick on every single run and workout that we had and at the end of summer training he was able to cruise through long runs with us without a problem. The kid has a bunch of talent that's ready to pour out of him during this XC season. I'm not a professional when it comes to predicting ranks for XC, but I'd put money on him making it into the top 40 this year, actually I can see him going mid to low 30's from how well he did while training with us. He just needed an extra push in order to really get going.

    1. Also, if my buddy Will Cather stays nice and healthy this year I could see him medal at states. I've been talking to him quite a bit and he say's training has been going well for him. He had a bit of a down year back in 2011, he still ran very well but had injury's here and there during the XC season that were holding him back a lot. He is an absolute beast and I remember back in middle school when any race where he didn't lap me was considered good. (he ran a 4:41 mile in eighth grade, who else can say that) I'm not going to ask you to change your rankings right now but i'm telling you that he's going to be in the top 30 by the end of the year.

    2. No campaigning for your friends. Etrain's top 50 should remain unbiased! It's become an honor and a goal of many to make that list.

  13. It was close to 100 degrees at Big Valley on Saturday so the top times from that meet would have been at least 20+ seconds faster probably. Also at the start of the race a little girl ran out into the middle of the course and caused the second and third place finishers Cather and Monroe to both wipe out. Between this and the heat, those guys along with Colwell all probably could have come close to sub 16. Watch out for these three district 6 guys at states this year. All three of them have a great shot at medaling this season.

  14. As for my own opinion, I have one name for you Etrain: Evan Williams. I've been pumping him up for a year now, and I'm telling you right now that I would not be at all shocked to see him win District 3 this year. He's defeated 5-10 guys on this list head-to-head, including two of the top 12. He's a force to be reckoned with.

  15. How about this for a nice early season matchup on Friday night over 2 miles? 5 of your top 35 plus 2 just missings at the GFS Inv at Haverford(GFS, DTW and Henderson).

  16. I would deff. say watch out for Austin Pondel, I'm his teammate (so alittle bias), but hes a monster in workouts... Im a 17:00 guy and he'll cruise with me on easy days but on hard days, watch out. Pondel is mean this year..
