So unfortunately due to some weird renting rules for cameras here on campus at Muhlenberg we are going to have to push are first show back a week. But we hope to have it all set up and ready to go so that you can view it by Monday night. We don't want it to be too long and hopefully it isn't really boring. We will do are best to make it interesting for all of you out there.
Let's talk about what races we are going to be talking about.
Last night at the Millrose Games Trials we saw a great run by Pennsbury's Connor Harriman as he crossed the line in about 4:20 exactly (4:20.32). Its a huge run for Harriman that puts him comfortably ahead of the rest of the state (for now), while unfortunately probably won't get him in to the Millrose games. Harriman certainly has a chance to mix it up at states and an outside chance at the gold, but this is also a good sign for the Pennsbury DMR squad which has flown under the radar during the Henderson v. LaSalle hype. Right now I still think Coyle, Huemmler and even Russell are favorites over Harriman for the mile, but he is pretty close to their level at this point. He can be down around 4:17 by states.
The PA girls killed it just saying.
Looking ahead, I'm very excited for Kevin Dare.
Here is how the events should play out order wise (distance events exclusively):
Mile
800
3000
4x800
Essentially the same order they will be in at states.
Here are the big names I saw in those events (sorry if I excluded someone, don't take offense to not being included).
1 Mile
Dylan Butera, Strath Haven
Will Cather, State College
Alex Coburn, CV
Jeff Groh, LDauphin
Pat Hopkins, Methacton
Jack Huemmler, Strath Haven
Curt Jewett, NE Bradford
Christian Kardish, HGPrep
Ryan Smathers, NEast
Curtis Watro, Methacton
Sam Williams, NE Bradford
The mile looks like it has the potential to be very exciting this weekend. What makes the mile interesting to me is the implications it has for DMRs down the road. CV has a bit of a sleeper DMR chance if they chose to run something fancy with Kunzweiler to 400 to St. Peter to Coburn. That relay could surprise some people. But they are much more likely to stay 4x8. Strath Haven's two stud legs are in this race coming off a great DMR performance. Butera hopefully can scare the SQS and we all know about Huemmler. He will be chasing Harriman's mark this weekend. Huemmler has been training to get out hard and push the pace so no doubt this will be a fast race. Smathers will be the guy to watch for the upset in my mind as he has the most potential off his outdoor season last year. He certainly has something to prove. Watch out for Will Cather as well, he ran a great double on this track last weekend and we will find out how legit he is after this race.
Getting back to those sleeper pick DMRs watch for the Methacton boys as a deep sleeper pick in the DM. This race will show if they are state qualifying material. And of course the NE Bradford boys have big potential as a DMR and as individuals. I secretly hope Williams just runs the 3k rather than the mile, but both guys hopefully can have a good day and land themselves in around 4:24 which would be great marks for this point indoors.
800m
Jake Brodeur, Hershey
Nate Hamilton, Hershey
Curt Jewett, NE Bradford
Tyler Johnston, NP
Alec Kunzweiler, CV
Joe Logue, Pennridge
Joe Masgai, Pennridge
Colin Meyers, Penncrest
Ryan Smathers, North East
Scott St. Peter, CV
The 800m will be interesting to me for a lot of reasons. First, we should see what kind of Kunzweiler is in relative to the best guys in the state. Logue is my state title favorite at this point and this is his first chance to run really fast. If the pace stays quick I would expect Logue to dip under 1:55. Kunzweiler did his best work outdoors last season and CV has a legit shot to repeat as outdoor 4x8 state champions. That is their main goal. We will see how serious their indoor 4x8 hopes are after this weekend with Kunzweiler and St. Peter needing to set some big marks. Pennridge has Masgai in the open 8 as well, their potential #2 4x8 leg. We can learn a lot about Pennridge's pieces after this weekend as well. Hershey was a solid team in XC, there is potential for a 4x8 if things pan out well at this meet.
3000m
Jon Colwell, Mifflin County
Jordan Crawford, Cedar Cliff
Matt Kazanjian, Penncrest
Jack Macauley, NP
Cole Nissley, LDauphin
Conner Quinn, Hatboro Horsham
Patrick Reilly, Dallastown
Sam Williams, Northeast Bradford
Looking for sleeper picks? Well a bunch of the guys on my sleeper list just popped up on the 3k roster for this weekend. Jack Macauley may not qualify as a sleeper in a lot of cases, but he is a sleeper for the state title. North Penn knows how to train their guys for track and he ran a 9:15 last year. He followed that up with a killer XC season. Although I expect the Henderson guys to both drop big 3k PRs this weekend, as of right now the 3k is still pretty wide open. Macauley should challenge the PA #1 mark this weekend. Sam Williams could be scary in this race, sub 9 is possible, but off the double I'm a little worried. I am convinced Conner Quinn is in pretty good shape. I like that 4:33 he ran earlier. Don't sleep on the former state champ.
Patrick Reilly, Jon Colwell and Jordan Crawford all were on my sleeper list after their most recent performances. These guys are on a much faster track this weekend than they were last weekend. Keep an eye on what they run.
4x800m
CValley
Hershey
Methacton
North Penn
State College
Strath Haven
I only listed the teams that had their hot relays listed. There are a few teams like Central Dauphin and Red Lion who have potential but I don't know their guys well enough to list them. Keep those squads in mind going forward, especially outdoors. Doubling will be the key for these teams as a lot of guys will be running on tired legs. CV vs. Strath Haven is the big match up for me personally. I think Haven is trying to run a pretty solid mark in this relay, they may opt for the 4x8 over the DMR at states so they need a big run here. North Penn, although seemingly nicely built for a DM, is going 4x8. They always do. So they need some big runs here to prove themselves.
Yale Invitational
At Yale there should be a lot of exciting performances. Willig dropped his 1:51 here last year.
Here are some entries worth noting.
DTown East in the 4x8. They haven't done much since their bout with DTWest early in the season, but this team is a solid sleeper for a 4x8 medal at states.
DTown West in the DMR. They could hit the SQS in the DM this weekend which is no joke. They were a 4x8 school last year, but they seem to be willingly making the transfer the DMR. Leidal and Steadman are nice 12-16 pieces for this relay.
Henderson in the DMR championship. Henderson finally has the chance to assert their dominance over the field. They should have good competition and they should have their best 4 legs on the track. There is potential here for a 10:20-10:25ish mark depending on if these guys are in speed shape yet or not. After this race we will know a lot more about the Henderson relays.
Great Valley in the DMR. They are another team with a shot at the SQS. Somebody needs to have a step up day for this quad if they are going to hit it. They have 3-4 guys who could potentially have that day with Willig and Wolffe being the most likely but Zatlin and even Doran are nice pieces as well. Willig was the guy to do it at XC states this fall.
Henderson and GFS have 4x8 entries but I feel these are likely B teams. Maybe we will see something dramatic here but I'm not getting my hopes up.
The 3k is stacked. Shearn, Aziz, Barchet and Russell will toe the line, all individual national qualifiers in XC. Shearn got a nice little tune up race last weekend and now is thrown into the fray with the big dogs. He is at a slight disadvantage because he hasn't had the chance to race as hard as the other 3 have. I think Russell may still be remembering that Briarwood meet in XC. He is my pick to win out of the PA guys with a time probably around 8:43 is what I want to say. That mark would be killer for this time of year, but the 3k is very good this year so a time in the 8:30s wouldn't surprise me. Shearn could be anywhere from 8:35 to 9 flat in my mind. I'm guessing in the upper 8:40s for him. Next I have Barchet in the low 8:50s and Aziz right behind him. Both those guys have potential to run a bunch faster, especially Aziz who is in his element.
Watch out for Lyle Wistar in this race as well. If he keeps his head and uses his kick, he could be under 9 minutes here as well, potentially even low 8:50s with Aziz. The rest of the Henderson guys, Willig, Szuhaj and Steadman all could challenge the 9:05 mark. Szuhaj ran 9 flat a while back. He is a nice sleeper here. Collins has been rolling for Henderson early, but Rimkis is the true long distance guy of the bunch. Stratman is no joke either.
Wolfee and Markle in the 8, Liedal in the mile. Could be interesting depending on how well these guys can double back from the relays which I believe are the day before.
Deep, deep sleeper is Abington in an uncrowded 4x8.
So why don't more of the top milers try for the Millrose Games?
ReplyDeleteIt should be exciting after this weekend to see if teams are going to run Dmr or 4x8 at states
ReplyDeleteWhat heat is DTown west in for the dmr?
ReplyDeleteMost of these teams don't know what they will run and won't know until after Meet of Champions. They will run what they think they have the best shot to medal or win.
ReplyDelete-RTJ
Logue vs Kunzweiler. It's about to go down
ReplyDeleteLavino Relays out in Lawrenceville, NJ should have some fast times. I think a few teams are running their 'A' relay DMR's.
ReplyDeleteWCH qualified both their DMR and "B" team 4x800 for States-10:22 & 8:19ish. DWest & Germantown Friends also in DMR and 4X8, respectively. Russell ran a 4:15 split.
ReplyDeleteRussell officially ran 4:14.9, eww. That's dirty for January, or anytime
ReplyDeleteaccording to coach K:
ReplyDelete4x8- 8:19 SQS
Moy- 2:02.6
Thompson- 2:02.0
Rimkis- 2:06.6
Lott- 2:07.9
DMR- 10:23 SQS
Reiny- 3:14
Hall- 51.3
Collins- 2:02.7
Russell- 4:14.9
DTWest 10:35 SQS
Markle 3:18
Steadman 2:03
Leidal 4:21
GFS around 8:16 for the SQS in the 4x8
That's the early world i heard
Russell just shut up every single doubter in the entire state
ReplyDeleteI feel so stupid for forgetting he was disgusting at the mile as a sophomore... he's dropping below 4:10 for indoor states, if someone pushes him so he has to run that hard for the win at least. He's definitely doing the mile 3k double, he runs the 3k today too. Barchet could've dropped below 3:10 no doubt, 15 guys on a 4 lane indoor track is ridiculous....
DeleteI don't think I've seen anyone improve at the rate Russell has been, he's been dropping the same amount of time off his PR's year after year. He better hope he gets a coach like Kevin kelly in college, that man knows how to train champions.
That's really impressive that WCH qualified a "B" 4x800. It's unfortunate that they can't take them to States because they deserve to.
ReplyDeleteRussell's split is dirty. He sets the standard for the weekend. If someone doesn't run a 4:17-8 open mile then he will be the top miler in the state. I'm impressed with the first three splits as well. Yale's track is four lanes and they like to stick 15 teams on the track rather than split the heats up. It's so poorly run and for the first legs to run those impressive splits they will challenge LaSalle if they run the DMR. They may even win if LaSalle isn't fresh and they decide to run fresh.
DTE made some noise too. I was a doubter on that 4x800, but now I think they will medal at States. Any splits on that one?
With the way things are looking, there are a lot of solid DMR's. That being said, the 4x800 is looking weak. Pennsbury being the ONLY team to break 8:10 at this point in the season is not good.
-RTJ
Whenever I heard talk of "east" & their relay team, I assumed it was WCE-way to go DTE. Didn't know they were even in the mix. Maybe WCH's 4x8 B team is more of a B+ team? District 1 is well represented.
DeleteO'Hara hasn't ran it yet
DeleteSo....as I've been saying since the 12/8 blog ...I think Russell is a serious threat to win any race at indoor states. And....the WCH/LaSalle DMR has the potential to be outstanding this year, possibly sub 10:10 come states/Penn Relays. And, WCH may send 10 or more to states. A grateful thanks to the Henderson boys for helping me keep my foot out of my mouth, at least for now!
ReplyDelete- RJJL
Russell just ran an 8:38. I knew he was a threat to win the 3k... but now I think it's his to lose if he runs it. Collins qualified in the 3k! WCH has a lot to think about. Rinkis and Stratman were on the bubble of qualifying for the too.
ReplyDeleteHuge race from Winstar of GFS running a great time. I thought Aziz would be 3k champ coming into the season... but as the season progresses I'm starting to doubt that. The exact opposite is happening with Russell. The more I think he could make some noise but I think it's Coyle vs Huemmler, the more he is making me believe it's Russell vs Coyle vs Huemmler.
Any word on Kevin Dare? Huemmler broke meet record? 4x8 or mile? Logue? Kunzweiler? So many good races going down.
-RTJ
Huemmler ran a 4:21
DeleteLogue ran 1:56.6 Kunzweiler ran 1:57.6 they went 1,2
DeleteActually, Huemmler ran a 4:20
DeletePennridge 4x4 ran a 3:20 meet record and PA#1. Huemmler split a 1:56 in the 4x8 also for those wondering.
Delete"There is potential here for a 10:20-10:25ish mark depending on if these guys are in speed shape yet or not."
ReplyDelete"He is my pick to win out of the PA guys with a time probably around 8:43 is what I want to say. That mark would be killer for this time of year, but the 3k is very good this year so a time in the 8:30s wouldn't surprise me."
I hope that you aren't including me in that whole "doubters" category considering these quotes that I said before the meet.
But still Russell is ahead of pace in my opinion and certainly could win both individual races at states (which does put them out of the DMR conversation for states). The 3k on paper is much easier (especially because two of his biggest competitors managed "only" 8:57 and 8:48 or so). The mile will be tougher just because Coyle and Huemmler's kicks are designed for a tactical race, but it is clear Russell is on their level at this point.
Hopefully I'll be able to share more of my thoughts in a video later this weekend.
sorry 8:54 for Shearn and 8:49 for Aziz
ReplyDeleteHuemmler looked real good running a meet record 4:20.82 mile. State College looked real good as Will Cather ran a so so 4:25 mile and followed that up with a low 1:56 and 50.9 relay splits. The relay also destroyed CV and Pennridge, with three of their guys having already run events. Colwell ran a great 3k, winning it with an 8:45.
ReplyDeletepennridge didn't run their A team in the 4x8, Logue ran 4x4 and that squad did pretty darn well running 3:20
Delete10:38 for cr north, 10:48 for cb east, 10:50 for upper dublin in DMR at Lavino relays. Wilson and Brand both ran about 3:14 in the 1200 and zingarini anchored all alone in about 4:23. Pennsbury also dropped a sick 8 flat and council rock south ran a pretty solid 8:12 look out for them down the road.
ReplyDeleteCRN boys told me
DeleteWilson- 3:12
Dupree - 52
Simmons -- 2:00
Zingarini -- 4:29
He didn't have anyone to run with. With a good race I can see Wilson breaking 3:10 and Zingarini low 4:20's off the mile double at states. But call me bias :)
--ForrestCRN
Those splits don't add up. Wilson was fast, but he was more 3:14. With a 3:12 they would be closer to 10:35
DeleteHe's right, with a 10:38, those splits are missing 5 seconds, which is quite a bit of change.
DeleteWilson is impressing me more and more. Coming into the season I didn't think he would be that great, but he is just coming on strong running a SQS in the mile, just missing the 3k (but he'll get it), and now a 3:14. I didn't think he had speed to him, but he's proving me wrong every week.
ReplyDeleteHow did the Brophy brothers run? Were they both in the DMR?
Pennsbury had three great relays run this weekend. Their SMR was solid meaning their 800 was 2 flat maybe under. 4x800 was great and I assume that DMR was either with four different people or after running multiple events. Either way, great weekend for them. If anyone has splits for any of those races post them up!
Huemmler ended that mile in a 59. Also split as fast as Cather in the 4x800. Hopefully he gets into a competitive mile soon, he's ready to roll. Strath Haven's DMR is looking better and better to me as well. Butera is ready to go! Running a SQS in the mile. Not sure of his 4x800 split, but his 1200 should be solid.
Logue had a rough time in the 800... he can and will go faster. His first lap was a rough one and had to fight to fix it. Next time he touches a banked track I am willing to bet he will drop a 1:53. I assume it will be in a 4x800... so I'm calling that to be his split.
Kunzweiler is looking good. He usually comes on late so a 1:57 is a solid mark for him. He'll probably drop to 1:54/1:53 by States.
Jack Macauley...? 9:15 isn't a bad time, but for him when he ran 9:00 at the first meet... somethings up. His 3200 at Glen Mills wasn't good for him either. Injury?
-RTJ
I was at that race and Joey got boxed in from the start his splits were 60-56. He worked his way out on the 2nd turn and got back up to the leaders on the last lap, out kicking kunzweiler in the final 150m.
DeleteThat's nasty, negativing splitting the 800 by 4 seconds, that's really impressive. If he goes out in 55 imagine what he could do.
DeleteSorry, I don't believe those splits.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteNo those were my splits. For some reason I was in the middle of the back line when I should have been on the top line. I couldn't get out at the start and was boxed for the first lap and a half then I finally got out and caught up to Alec and some other guy I don't think was from PA.
DeleteThey did random lane assignments Kunzweiler was in a bad starting position as well. He was very aggressive off the start though
DeleteYeah the start was really bad. A couple elbows were thrown but that is what makes this fun right?
DeleteThat's just indoor. 16 people in 6 lanes
DeleteBesidse the WCH DMR, two other weekend relays performances stood out to me. One isn't a distance event, but the Pennridge 4x400 at 3:20.4 in mid January, winning going away, is incredible.
ReplyDeleteThe other was the Msgr Bonner DMR at 10:41. Where did that come from? -RJJL
Pennsbury 4x8 splits:
ReplyDeleteSauer, 2:01
O'Connell, 2:00
Webb, 2:01
Harriman, 1:58
CB East DMR Splits:
Brand, 3:15
Button, 53
Brophy, 1:59
Brophy, 4:39
Bonner i'm guessing had Sullivan on lead off and McDermott on anchor. They must have split FAST because no other member on that team stands out.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have splits on that 4x400? I'm guessing Stenderowicz went 48, Logue 50, Class 51, and Kim 51? I think they will move at States, but I think Penn Wood will win the 4x400. Especially if Pennridge goes for the 4x800 as well.
Which Brophy is which? I assume older Brophy is 800 and Freshman is mile.
Solid splits from Pennsbury. Webb has speed to him.
-RTJ
Kim 51.x
DeleteLogue 49.x
Class 50.x
Stederowicz 49.
I had logue at 49,also CV second meet of year will not put alot of stock in indoor season remember last yr 9th at states, then won outdoor, coaches just keep the guys in enough shape.colwell rolled, pennridge 4x4 2 most impressive times
ReplyDeleteHave to give a shout out to the girl who won the 3000( 1008)went 504-504 I think CB East.
ReplyDeleteBonner's DMR splits:
ReplyDeleteSullivan: 3:15
Harris: 51
Rastatter: 2:06
Mcdermott: 4:25
Her name is Veronica Eder. She broke out last year and continues to drop impressive times.
ReplyDelete49 for indoor is fast... 49 in January is even more impressive. Especially since Logue trains with middle distance or distance.
This year's times have been insane in cross country and track. The times have exponentially dropped. I don't know if it was because they thought the world was going to end or extreme intrinsic motivation probably caused by Gangnam style/Call Me Maybe, either way these kids are dropping insane times.
Colwell ended his 3k in a 27 I heard.
