What to Look Forward to this Weekend

If all goes right by early next week we will have a first version of our weekly show out, two skype video interviews with some of PAs top athletes, and a girls weekly wrap up courtesy of the one and only RTJ (if he wants to continue his job, which has been excitingly successful).

And we should have a lot to talk about.

We have the usual TFCAofGP meets which always produce some solid marks and break out performances. I always enjoy checking out the results of this meet. Hopefully, guys like Norris are back to racing after their XC haitus. One of the other guys I'm hoping to see back is Brent Kennedy from Kiski. He has a boat load of potential obviously given his crazy doubling and triplinig last year. Think about the times Will Cather has been dropping, Kennedy remains me of Cather with maybe a bit less speed and more strength. He could run a very nice mile/3k and they have some nice pieces for a DMR again. All the TSTCA guys can drop a lot of time still. I'm really excited to see who begins to break out. Watch out for my boy, sleeper pick, Tyler Rigby.

Out at the Armory we should see some fast times and I guarentee you we will see a new PA #1.

Sam Williams will be running a 1 mile steeple chase race at the armory this weekend. It will be the first ever indoor steeplechase race by a PA runner so he will set the state record assuming he finishes the race! We are hoping to have Sam on a show in the coming week to share his experience.

In the mile Connor Harriman, the current PA #1 will face off against Jack Huemmler from Strath Haven (the current PA #2) in a battle of 2 top 5 runners in the extremely competitive PA mile scene. Both have Millrose games aspirations. Ed Cheserek and Jack Boyle highlight some of the other names in the field. Cheserek should keep things fast, but Huemmler (and we believe Harriman) have both proven that they have dangerous kicks and that could help get them a trip to the Armory down the line. Harriman will then likely double back some 5 hours later for the DMR where Pennsbury will take on the likes of Regional XC champs CBA and defending national indoor champions St. Benedict's led by super star anchor leg Ed Cheserek. Holy Ghost Prep is also slated to race in the meet with a healthy Christian Kardish coming off one of his best races of the year at Kevin Dare.

At F&M there's an outside chance we will see guys like Shawn Wolfe, Jeff Groh and Cole Nissley on the track. Keep your eyes on those results for possible sleepers heading into championship season.

Keep making suggestions and such for the show and keep dropping hot times so I got stuff to talk about.

Stay classy.

  2. Where is Henderson going?

  3. Henderson will be at the armory on the 4th I believe? DMR I am pretty sure. Opens I assume like last year. The DMR they will switch the order up (again, like last year). Opens too I believe to get the last fast mark before States. Pretty sure, but not 100%. Get RJJL in here haha.

Luckily for Huemmler and Harriman, Boyle isn't the best miler. It's unfortunate that Cheserek is in this race. I remember last year when we found out he was in Ned's qualifying race (except that race only took the winner). On the bright side, TWO runners qualify! He is a stud two miler though. I think those two can out kick Boyle in a tactical race. I think it would be in Harriman's best interest to wait until the last lap and a half with the group and push, he has the huge kick to do it. If he lucks out and the field is bunched up still, he has a good chance of doing it. Jack needs to takes it over with three laps to go. Harriman and the field will go with him. It's too big of a race not to and they wouldn't leave that gap for a kick. It's too risky. I think Jack's strong enough to make that move and still have enough for him to put on a kick... kind of like he did at Burdette and Kevin Dare, just for Millrose with closer competition, so faster! He'd be my pick to make it.

Idk if Harriman is running the mile in the DMR, but if he is they will roll! If he recovers nicely, I'd say they drop something in the high 10:20's (3:14, 51, 1:59, 4:24). Henderson already showed us how impressive their DMR is, so no need to try and guess.

HGP has room to drop a 10:30 high. I think they can do it. Kardish is a talented kid. He split 1:59 last year indoors as a sophomore. He also has 4:18 1600 speed... keep that in mind.

  4. I imagine this weekend Henderson will be running at the TFCAofGP association meet to try and get some guys qualified for the Meet of Champions meet at Lehigh. It is usually a very competitive meet across the board and a good chance to get fast times in and a good solid race before states.

Forrest and I are hoping to be able to cover this meet live on location. Hopefully more details on that as we move closer to the meet.

    2. yes you are correct but the meet of champions meet is at Lehigh which is what I was referring to in my above comment

i meant qualify guys for the meet of champs at Lehigh as opposed to qualifying guys at lehigh for the meet of champions

      hope that makes sense

  5. If Hendrson switches up the order for their dmr, their time might be much slower. Barchet is 15 seconds slower than russell in the mile at this point, with luck he could run a 4:23... with luck. But, then again, Barchet's 1200 was slow in a 3:14 he could've dropped 4 seconds off if it wasnt so crouded i think, but you need to learn to cope with that. I hear Russell split 3:09 during the first 1200 of his mile leg when he was out in lane 2 and 3 for the entire first 1200 because he had to pass practically 10 guys. He's already better than Willig was at this point in the season (all except for the 800, of course) and he's a junior. Russell's range is freaky also. Sooo.... Anyone see a 3 flat for russell? That would actually improve their time by 6 seconds and put them at 10:16, their 800 leg may improve too, they have 3 other people who are already 2:03 or better, hall already ran a solid 51 so there is no improvement needed from him, but hey, that could happen too.

On another note, is anyone else really bummed we wont see the Henderson V. Lasalle DMR face off until nationals? It's funny how the hype moved from Henderson v Ohara, to Henerson V Lasalle which is also a D12 School.

    1. Lasalle usually dosen't run nationals, and I don't think they will this year either. From what I see, Lasalle looks like they take off after indoor states and prepares for Penn Relays. Last year I believe that both Lasalle and WCH ran the DMR at the Colonial Relays at William and Mary. So maybe we will see them run there again this year or possibly not until the COA at Penn Relays.

    2. Willig is a 1:51 guy, Russell is a 1:58ish at this point sub 3 won't happen, not even close.

      Delete
    3. Russell is a strength based runner, but you need speed to run sub 3. I could see him running splits like: 60,62, 62/61 for a 3:04 or 3:05. But he couldnt drop a 58 openning like Willig and then run 61 60. Unless he's been getting in speed and is going to drop sub 1:55 in the open 800. But then again, who knows with this kid (other then Kevin Kelly!)

  6. Etrain, when you say you are going to be at Lehigh doing live coverage do you mean this week or MOC?

RTJ, why won't we be seeing Henderson vs LaSalle DMR at states?

    1. Etrain and I are hoping to be at the Meet of Champions. Sorry for the confusing language.

We're hoping to film racing and get interviews, ect. We won't be able to attend the state meet due to our conference championships being the same day.

  7. I never said we won't see a Henderson vs LaSalle DMR, I just said that Henderson will be at the armory on the 4th and Russell is running the 1200 and open mile I believe. But now on this topic, I don't think we will see a Henderson vs LaSalle DMR. One, I don't think Henderson will do it, but who knows? Two, I think LaSalle would be better for the 4x800. You have Pennsbury, but you also have Coyle, Stone, and Magee who are already under 2. One more and they will move in the 4x800 in this wide open field. I think Henderson will bring their "B" relay and let them run a DMR... and maybe even medal... I'd say Russell does the mile/3k (wins one of them) and Barchet 3k.

Also, you can't say that Russell is ahead of Ned in everything. His 4:14.9 was a split, Ned went 4:15 at Hispanic Games open which was almost two weeks before the Yale invitational. Not even to mention that the 4:14.9 was a split. A beast split, but a split nonetheless. Ned also ran the 3k at Burdette. Early season and flat track... so naturally he would beat him. He ran an 8:58. He chose to run the 800 at Yale over the 3k... good choice, he broke the State record that meet.

You are comparing Barchet's flat track open to Russell's banked track split. You can't do that. He wouldn't be 15 seconds slower on a banked track. He can probably drop a 4:25.

3 flat is a fast time, one that requires a fast 800. If his 800 PR is 1:59.93... he'd have to go a 60 last two laps to do that. When Ned did it at MoC he went through in 1:58. I'd say Russell can drop around 3:05-6.

Wade Endress (200-5k), Ned Willig(400-5k), Drew Magaha (200-5k), Tom Kehl (200-5k), Tom Mallon (400-5k)... they had freaky ranges as runners. Russell is more of a (dominate) miler, two miler, 3k, and 5k runner.

    1. I'm with RTJ on this one. You've seen all of those guys drop ridiculous 400 times, and in some cases 200's. All of the guys on that list split 1:50 during high school. (Maybe Willig didn't, but he ran 1:51 so many times I think he can be put in that group).

Does anyone know if Tom Mallon even ran the 1200? I would've loved to see that. I think he could be easy sub 3. I know Endress ran 2:58 split for PSU last year, and the race was fairly tactical, I think he could've been closer to 2:55 with a pushed pace.

    2. Why would Henderson run Barchet in the 3k at the armory when they still need to qualify Rimkis and Stratman in it?

      Delete
    3. I believe he was outlining Henderson's plan for states at the point where he mentioned Barchet, not the armory

    4. Willig just ran a 2:22 I believe for 1k, he Zavon Watkins and Joe Rosa are the only guys I know who can run 3 flat (and Rosa's and Watkin's mark was outdoors). 4:14.9 and 8:38 indicate to me that Russell is running 4:14 off strength not speed. If Russell drops a time around 4:10 like Rosa did then I will consider the 3 flat possibility. Watkins could barely run 4:15 but he could run 1:47 split so he got by fine.

  8. Like Train said, watch out for Rigby at TSTCA. I saw him run down Ryan Smathers from about 40 meters back with around 250 to go, very impressive race by him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him run around 4:28.

  9. I was outlining States like Etrain said. Sorry, that transition was a little rough. The point was, all of Henderson's athletes that deserve to go to States will in my opinion. Except they will run a DMR, not a 4x800 (they're built more for it). Collins may even give up his open 3k to lead off the DMR. It would be up to him what he thinks will get him a medal (I think DMR has a better chance of it).

Mallon had 48, 1:49, and 4:16 (this was indoors) speed. I assume he could run a 3 flat if he would have raced it senior year. He also had unbelievable pacing skills. His 800's were often even splits. He broke the record on a 54-54 split.
